We are delighted to announce that St. Thomas the Apostle, Hollywood, will present four enchanting concerts of alluring music as part of our first Concert Series in the 2014-2015 season. The entire season will be announced very soon, but please mark your calendars for the inaugural concert, set to take place on Sunday, 12 October at 7:00pm: Chansons of the 14th and 15th Centuries. Stacey Helley's Favolare Project presents an evening of early music, featuring settings of courtly lyrics of longing by Dufay, Binchois, Busnois and other priest-composers. The program also features popular melodies of the Ars Nova and Ars Subilitor, which were the hit tunes of their day. These melodies were quite well-known and often later repackaged as sacred when incorporated into Mass settings. An assortment of voices and early music instruments, including the St. Thomas Memorial Organ, will delight and enthrall in the beautiful setting of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. While all concerts in the series are free, voluntary donations are accepted at the door to benefit the parish and its music program. Please send inquiries to our Organist/Choirmaster, Jeffrey Parola,.

We thank the 42 households who shopped at Ralph's between 1 June and 31 August and registered their rewards card to support S. Thomas. This quarter's contribution of $177.61 makes the total contributed by Ralph's since October 2007 to be $4,730.96!

On Saturday, 11 October from 1pm to 3pm, at St. John's Cathedral (514 W. Adams Blvd.) The Guibord Center presents a children's interfaith event for the whole family: The Creation of a Sukkah in Observance of Sukkot (II).

A sukkah is a temporary hut constructed for use during the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot. It is topped with branches and often well decorated with autumnal, harvest or Judaic themes. The Book of Vayikra (Leviticus) describes it as a symbolic wilderness shelter, commemorating the time God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness they inhabited after they were freed from slavery in Egypt.

It is common for Jews to eat, sleep and otherwise spend time in the sukkah. In Judaism, Sukkot is considered a joyous occasion and is referred to in Hebrew as Yom Simchateinu (the day of our rejoicing) or Z'man Simchateinu (the time of our rejoicing), but the sukkah itself symbolizes the frailty and transience of life and its dependence on God.

Led by Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels from Temple Beth Shir Shalom, the program offers an introduction to Sukkot for children and adults; learning to wave the "lulav" (a palm frond, myrtle and willow branches, and a citron), an important ritual during Sukkot; and making decorations for the Sukkah with arts and crafts materials. This interfaith experience will allow children and their families from different faith traditions to meet in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

The Parish of St. Thomas is an annual financial supporter of this event. If you would like to contribute, Christopher Rose will be collecting contributions this Sunday, and for the next two weeks following the Mass. Checks should be made out to AIDS Project Los Angeles or A.P.L.A. Cash is also welcome. You may also place your donation in the collection plate.

On Sunday, 19 October at 7pm, the pleasure of your company is requested at a concert reading of "Limberlost - the Musical" by parishioner Helen Slayton Hughes and music by Dana Lewis Howell. The reading will take place at St. Marks, Glendale (1020 N Brand Ave), and Helen's birthday party will follow. Seating is limited RSVP HERE.

On this day in 1821 Law student Charles Finney, 29, went into the woods near his home to settle the question of his soul's salvation. That night, he experienced a dramatic conversion, full of what seemed "waves of liquid love throughout his body." Finney later became American history's greatest revivalist and purportedly converted 500,000 people.

Regardless of what the signs read, parking on Gardner Street is now allowed on Sundays unrestricted between 7am and 1pm. There is no two-hour time limit!
