St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

A Note from the Canon Rector and His Family

Dear Parishioners, Friends, Brothers and Sisters,

I am writing to you from my parents' home in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. We are all distressed by my youngest brother's sudden death- he was forty-two years old. We have received flowers, cards, greetings and condolences from many, many of you. My Mum and Dad wish me to express, most emphatically, our gratitude for such warmth, support and kindness.

The funeral liturgy will be taking place at 10.30am on Friday 26th September at Llwydcoed Crematorium near Aberdare. The Clergy of our home-parish of Merthyr Tydfil have been wonderfully supportive and will conduct the liturgy- Father Mark Prevett, Father Tom Bates and Father David Thomas Morris. There will be a Requiem Mass next Wednesday evening at the daughter Church of St Tydfil's Well, The Quar.
I am personally very grateful to all our assisting clergy at St Thomas the Apostle, Hollywood, for all their hard work and dedication, during this time of 'compassionate leave.' The Wardens, Officers, Vestry, Administrative Staff, Diocesan Staff, Bishops and Parishioners have all been so kind, generous and supportive- thank you.

I will return to Los Angeles on 8th September and will, with your indulgence, take a planned vacation with Father Colin Amos for ten days.

Please remember my brother, Jason Neil Davies, RIP, in your prayers- as I remember all of you in my daily intercessions.

With our love and prayers,

Mr and Mrs John and Janis Davies, Richard Davies, Jan O'Neill, Canon Ian Elliott Davies

St. Thomas Concert Series

We are delighted to announce that St. Thomas the Apostle, Hollywood, will present four enchanting concerts of alluring music as part of our first Concert Series in the 2014-2015 season. The entire season will be announced very soon, but please mark your calendars for the inaugural concert, set to take place on Sunday, 12 October at 7:00pm: Chansons of the 14th and 15th Centuries. Stacey Helley's Favolare Project presents an evening of early music, featuring settings of courtly lyrics of longing by Dufay, Binchois, Busnois and other priest-composers. The program also features popular melodies of the Ars Nova and Ars Subilitor, which were the hit tunes of their day. These melodies were quite well-known and often later repackaged as sacred when incorporated into Mass settings. An assortment of voices and early music instruments, including the St. Thomas Memorial Organ, will delight and enthrall in the beautiful setting of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. While all concerts in the series are free, voluntary donations are accepted at the door to benefit the parish and its music program. Please send inquiries to our Organist/Choirmaster, Jeffrey Parola,.

VERSED - The Holy City

Back by popular demand, this season of Versed offers an opportunity for young adults (aged 21-39) in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles to enjoy dinner with peers, and engage with our three dynamic Bishops on a scripturally-inspired theme.

On Tuesdays in October, we will gather at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul to explore Jerusalem - in scripture, tradition, history and culture. Each dinner will be hosted by a member of the Program Group for Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and will feature an extended reflection by one of our Bishops. We'll also welcome back our friend Rabbi Noah Farkas.

  • October 7th: David, Solomon & The Promise with Bishop Mary Glasspool
  • October 14th: Siege, Exile & the Unexpected with Bishop Diane Bruce
  • October 21st: The Time of Jesus & Jerusalem's Destruction with Rabbi Noah Farkus

The Guibord Center Presents
"The Creation of a Sukkah in Observance of Sukkot (II): A children's interfaith event for the whole family!

On Saturday, 11 October from 1pm to 3pm, at St. John's Cathedral (514 W. Adams Blvd.) The Guibord Center presents a children's interfaith event for the whole family: The Creation of a Sukkah in Observance of Sukkot (II).

A sukkah is a temporary hut constructed for use during the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot. It is topped with branches and often well decorated with autumnal, harvest or Judaic themes. The Book of Vayikra (Leviticus) describes it as a symbolic wilderness shelter, commemorating the time God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness they inhabited after they were freed from slavery in Egypt.

It is common for Jews to eat, sleep and otherwise spend time in the sukkah. In Judaism, Sukkot is considered a joyous occasion and is referred to in Hebrew as Yom Simchateinu (the day of our rejoicing) or Z'man Simchateinu (the time of our rejoicing), but the sukkah itself symbolizes the frailty and transience of life and its dependence on God.

Led by Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels from Temple Beth Shir Shalom, the program offers an introduction to Sukkot for children and adults; learning to wave the "lulav" (a palm frond, myrtle and willow branches, and a citron), an important ritual during Sukkot; and making decorations for the Sukkah with arts and crafts materials. This interfaith experience will allow children and their families from different faith traditions to meet in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

On This Day in
Christian History

On this day in 1460 Pope Pius assembled European leaders, then delivered a three-hour sermon to inspire them to launch a new crusade against the Turks. The speech worked, but then another speaker, Cardinal Bessarion, added a three-hour sermon of his own. After six hours of preaching, the European princes lost all interest in the cause; they never mount the called-for crusade.
