St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

Mary Johnston, RIP

Long-time Parishioner Mary Johnston's Requiem will be said tomorrow at 3pm. All Parishioners are strongly encouraged to attend. Fr. Steve De Muth with Officiate, and Dea. Johson & Canon Davies will be participating as well.

Due to this Requiem, there will be no 5pm Vigil Mass.

Organist/Choirmaster

After considerable reflection and prayer, I have made the very difficult decision of combining the organist and choirmaster positions at St. Thomas. By combining these two posts, St. Thomas will now have a single organist/choirmaster who will report directly to me on all music-related issues affecting the choir and its role in our many diverse liturgies.

This decision was difficult because consolidation of the organist and choirmaster roles in one person necessarily eliminated the choirmaster position that has been held by long time parishioner, Jim Keltner, during most of the last twenty years. Still, as St. Thomas continues to move forward to "Claim Our Heritage and Build Our Future," I am confident that, in the long run, this consolidation is in the best interests of our beloved Parish.

Words cannot adequately express the gratitude I, personally, feel for Jim Keltner. He has been the rock of the choir since even before I arrived in Hollywood in 2002. For so many years, Jim has brought beautiful music to the people and Parish of St. Thomas. Jim's prayerful music has touched so many who have walked through our doors that it will forever be part of our sacred place of worship. For that, the entire St. Thomas community is eternally grateful. Of course, Jim continues to be a vibrant and important part of the St. Thomas community.

Beginning in September, after the choir's hiatus, the current organist at St. Thomas, Jeffrey Parola, will take over the position of organist/choirmaster. Jeffrey is a talented and accomplished musician, who is currently finishing his doctoral studies in composition at the USC Thornton School of Music. Please join me in welcoming Jeffrey with open arms to his new role at St. Thomas.

Love and prayers,

Canon Ian Elliott Davies

Adult Education Series

Beginning Saturday, 2 August at 10:30am a new Adult Education Series, "Let's Talk About..." will take place in the Rectory. This is intended to be a space where no questions are small and where our understanding of Christ will grow in our community. The first session will be led by Canon Ian Elliott Davies. All are invited and welcome to bring any light dish to share. Contact Salvador Hernandez if you have questions.

Catechumen Class Forming

Interested in becoming a member of St. Thomas or in reinvigorating your knowledge of our faith and worship? It's time to start thinking about joining this year's Catechumen Class. This course, which meets every Saturday, beginning after Labor Day and running right up to the Great Easter Vigil, is required for anybody who wishes to be Baptized, Confirmed, or Received in the Church. It's also open to a limited number of current Parishioners who are interested in learning more and Reaffirming their commitment to Christ. Interested parties should contact the Parish Office to schedule a meeting with Canon Davies in the coming weeks.

Parish Choir

We thank the Parish Choir for a wonderful year of service culminating with the very successful Family Follies. The choir is now on a two-month hiatus, during which time Cantors have been engaged to lead the High Masses. We look forward to September when the choir returns to the High Mass.

St. Thomas Featured in Hollywood Heritage Newsletter

Click Here to view an article about St. Thomas in the most recent Newsletter published by the Hollywood Heritage Museum. The article begins on page 6. We thank Parishioner Laura Stalker for her involvement in getting this achieved.

We thank the 39 households (an increase of 11 since last quarter!) who shopped at Ralph's between 1 March 2014 and 31 May 2014 and registered their rewards card to support St. Thomas. This quarter's contribution of $144.75 makes the total contributed by Ralph's since October 2007 to be $4,553.35! Every time these Parishioners use their Ralph's card at checkout, the company contributes a percentage to the Parish (NOTE: You must use a physical card; entering your phone number at checkout does NOT benefit the Parish). To confirm that you are one of the 39 households contributing, look at the very bottom of your next receipt. It should say that Ralph's is making a donation to St. Thomas on your behalf. If you shop at Ralph's and would like to help the church at no cost to you (and no cost to your personal Ralph's Rewards), simply register your card:

1. Go to www.ralphs.com
2. Sign in (or sign up if it's your first time)
3. Click "My Account"
4. Scroll to the section labeled "Community Rewards" and click "Edit"
5. Type "84981" (without quotes) in the search box.

On This Day in
Christian History

On this day in 1593 King Henry IV of France, raised a Protestant, converted to Catholicism. Long considered a political move, the conversion is now thought to have been sincere, partially because of the king's statement that "religion is not changed as easily as a shirt." His conversion did not end his sympathy for Protestants, however, and in 1598 he promulgated the Edict of Nantes, giving Protestants freedom of worship and permitting them to garrison certain towns for security.
