St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

Life Line Screening

On Tuesday, 10 June, the Parish will once again host Life LIne Screening sponsored by St. Vincent Medical Center. Life Line Screening will be offering safe, painless, non-invasive preventive health screenings that are typically not part of a routine physical. Screenings to be offered are:

1. Stroke/Carotid Artery Screening ($70) - Ultrasound scan of carotid arteries that screens for buildup of fatty plaque - a leading cause of strokes.

2. Heart Rhythm Screening or Atrial Fibrillation ($70) - A quick and easy test using EKG electrodes placed on the arms and legs to identify the presence or absence of an irregular heartbeat.

3. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening ($70) - Ultrasound screening for an abdominal aneurysm (enlargement) that could lead to a ruptured aorta.

4. Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening ($60) - Evaluates for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in the lower extremities, which increases the risk of heart disease.

5. Osteoporosis Risk Assessment ($60) - Ultrasound screen of the heel for bone mass density. Osteoporosis is painless and silent in its early stages.

Package A (includes tests 1-4): $139
Package B (includes all 5 tests): $149

Register today by calling (888) 653-6450. Not only will you receive a $10 discount off any package priced $139 and up, but St. Thomas will also receive a $10 donation for any member that signs up through this number and attends the screening. (NOTE: St. Thomas only receives the donation if you pre-register by phone).

Ministry Fair

On Sunday, 15 June following the High Mass, the annual Ministry Fair will be held. Participants will be provided a small card, which will be marked as they visit each of the ministries represented. After the Fair, one card will be chosen at random, and its owner will be given a small gift for his or her participation. Details to follow as the event draws near.

Evensong & Benediction

Please join us on Saturday, 21 June for our second Evensong and Benediction of the year, this one being for the solemnity of Corpus Christi and will be featuring the works of Victoria, Scarabelli, Morales, Thalben-Ball and others sung by the LASchola under the direction of Jay Tuttle, and accompanied by guest organist Paul Meier.

The Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ), also known as Corpus Domini, is a liturgical solemnity celebrating the tradition and belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ and his Real Presence in the Eucharist. It emphasizes the joy of the institution of the Eucharist, which was observed on Holy Thursday in the somber atmosphere of the nearness of Good Friday.

Evensong originates from the Monastic Hours and consists of the distinctive portions of the ancient Offices of Vespers and Compline. In Choral Evensong the Choir traditionally sings the appointed Psalm, the Canticles and Responses on behalf of the Congregation. Hymns are sung by the congregation. The musical setting can be simple or elaborate and can date from before the English Reformation to the present day.

Benediction is the liturgy of praise and worship focused on the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. The word 'Benediction' refers to the solemn blessing with the Eucharistic Host (contained in the precious monstrance) over the People.

All are welcome and a potluck reception will be held in the rectory garden after the service.

The Guibord Center - A New Community Event Added to 2014 Schedule!

The Guibord Center Advisor Jihad Turk has graciously invited us to return to The Islamic Center of Southern California to once again experience "The Breaking of the Fast: If'tar". This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Muslim fasting during the month of Ramadan, and to enter into conversation with one another about the meaning of fasting in your own faith tradition.

Our first If'tar event in 2012 was filmed and photographed and is available on our web site HERE. For many attendees the best parts of the conversation happened among the participants at each table, and in this case "you had to be there." And then there is the amazing hospitality provided by our hosts for the evening, The Islamic Center.

Take advantage of this special opportunity, bring a friend, and invite others to join us at this free event. You may RSVP HERE.

Endowment & Capital Campaign

On Wednesday, June 4th, the Board of the St. Thomas the Apostle Endowment voted unanimously to make a matching pledge to the Capital Campaign of up to a maximum of $50,000 to be paid over 5 years. The way this works is that if you make a pledge to the Capital Campaign after June 1, 2014, the St. Thomas Endowment will match your pledge and any payments made on your pledge in each of the next five years up to a maximum of $10,000 per year, or $50,000 over 5 years!

As many of you know, the St. Thomas the Apostle Endowment is the largest annual contributor to St. Thomas. The Endowment is the result of bequests by members of St. Thomas the Apostle and exists to provide a stable source of income for the ministry of St. Thomas. Each year, income generated by the professionally managed Endowment fund helps St. Thomas pay its bills and minister to the Parish and to the larger community. A guiding principal of the Endowment is that only the income it generates is used, so the corpus can continue to produce the income we rely on year after year.

This matching gift from the St. Thomas Endowment means that if you pledge and pay $5,000 to the Capital Campaign over 5 years, your gift will be doubled to $10,000! A pledge of $5,000 over five years is only about $2.75 per day, or less than many of us spend on tea or coffee at our favorite coffee spot. If just ten parishioners pledge and pay a total of $5,000 over five years, the Endowment will match these contributions, resulting in an additional $100,000 for the projects being funded by our Capital Campaign. Just think, all it will take is 10 new pledges of $2,75 per day for five years and an additional $100,000 will be available to complete the organ; repair the Stained Glass Windows; provide greater protection for our beautiful church; upgrade our kitchen for outreach; and provide air conditioning for the church.

If you haven't pledged yet, NOW is the time to do it. Simply go to our website or visit the Capital Campaign table after Mass on Sunday.
