Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

  "The Bible, Women and Violence"
presented by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine

Sunday, 14 July 2013
1:30pm

St. John's Pro-Cathedral
514 W. Adams St.

The Bible has been viewed as a misogynist text that treats women as property, sanctions their abuse, promotes their subordination, and proclaims the impossible standard of virgin mother.

How has the Bible been used to prevent women's flourishing, and how might a more historically informed and theologically aware reading recover the Bible as an inspirational resource for both women and men?

Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences, combines historical-critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-Jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies.

Free Admission - Reception Follows!

On This Day in
Christian History

On this day in 1439, Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholics signed the Decree of Union at the Council of Florence, creating an official union between the two churches. Popular sentiment in Constantinople opposed the decree, and when the Turks captured the city, the union ceased. However, the council's definition of doctrine and its principles of church union (unity in faith, diversity in rite) have proved useful in subsequent church talks.
