Today is the 15th Annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy!  

On the National Day-and throughout the month of May-teens and parents are invited to take an online challenge.  The goal of The National Day Quiz is to give Quiz-takers the chance to figure out how they'll handy risky situations like binge drinking, hook ups, and unprotected sex.  After all the best time to figure out how you'll handle a tough situation is before you find yourself in one.

And don't forget-we're celebrating teen pregnancy prevention month throughout the month of May, so even if you can't participate today, there's still plenty of time to support this work!

National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.
 
Every May the nation recognizes the historic progress made in preventing teen pregnancy and renews its commitment to address the still high rates of teen pregnancy and childbearing.  Whether you have two minutes, two hours, or two cays to devote to supporting National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Awareness Month, The National Campaign invites all get involved.  Below are a number of things the Office of Adolescent Health has planned:
  • National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month Supporter Kit The Supporter Kit provides 12 concrete ways to participate in National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, sample social media language for Twitter and Facebook, sample newsletter language, and a sample customizable news release. 

  • Friday, May 6, 2016 12:00-12:30 p.m. ET
    Teen pregnancy and birth rates are at historic lows but there is still more work to be done. Join OAH and chat partner The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy on May 6 at noon for a Twitter chat to share and get great ideas about how you can support National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Awareness Month. Follow the conversation and participate using #NTPPM. 
  • Webinar: Digital Town Hall--Teen Pregnancy Prevention Wednesday, May 11, 2016 2:00-3:30 p.m. ET Join OAH on May 11 at 2pm ET for a Digital Town Hall webinar discussing the importance of a continued focus on teen pregnancy prevention.  Panelists will include speakers from OAH who will share information about the program, grantees who will discuss their successes during the program, and experts from the field of teen pregnancy prevention who will share outside-the-box ways to get involved and support efforts to prevent teen pregnancy. Register for the webinar here.

Join OPA's Thunderclap to Increase Awareness of Available Family Planning Services


OPA is launching a thunderclap on May 14, 2016, which will allow people to share a clinic locator which that connects the public with Title X-funded family planning clinics across the U.S. Thunderclaps are a way to engage and share important messages at the same time via social media channels. The CDC announced  that birth rates among Hispanic and black youth fell nearly 50 percent between 2006 and 2014, bringing the national teen birth rate to a record low. Yet large racial, regional and socioeconomic disparities remain, with birth rates for black and Hispanic teens still twice as high as for white teens. This webinar recording includes strategies for further reducing teen pregnancy, including increasing access to teen-friendly health services and expanding use of effective contraceptive methods, such as long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs).

The Youth Providers 2.0 initiative has released compilations of clinical care resources on sexual and reproductive health, confidentiality, mental health, substance use, and physical and psychosocial development. The resources, which include content from Child Trends, provide guidance for healthcare providers and youth-serving professionals. YP2.0 has also published compilations of resources aimed at teens and parents. The initiative is a collaboration of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

IHS Holds Teleconference Call to Address LGBT2S Health Issues 
                            
The Indian Health Service will hold a public teleconference call to seek broad input on efforts to advance and promote the health needs of the American Indian and Alaska Native Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Two-Spirit communities. This is the first of a series of public teleconferences that will take place this year.
Themes that resulted from previous discussions included service and eligibility; clinical services; behavioral health; suicide; youth services; confidentiality and organization strategies.
