Sarah Brown on Sex Ed.

"The Internet is already a major source of sex information, some of it inaccurate, so why not encourage development of responsible, relevant sex information that would appeal to teens and be easy to use?"  So wonders National Campaign CEO Sarah Brown in an op-ed in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.  "Sex education materials and conversations provided through digital and social media could be useful adjuncts to classes and programs that may be offered in a community or school system; in areas where no such programs exist, they may help to fill serious gaps."

Taxpayer Costs.

The National Conference of State Legislatures has a handy new map of the U.S. outlining the public costs of teen childbearing.  Be sure to visit their helpful portal on teen pregnancy for other terrific resources as well.

NFPRHA Peer to Peer Service Delivery Call

Piloting the Use of the Copper IUD as Emergency Contraception

Does your health center offer the copper IUD as emergency contraception (EC)? On NFPRHA's July peer-to-peer service delivery call, you can learn from NFPRHA members who have implemented this practice in their health centers. The call will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2014, 3:00 p.m. ET register today!

Clinical literature shows that if inserted within five days after unprotected intercourse, the copper IUD can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 99.9%. However, the copper IUD is underutilized as an option for patients seeking EC in clinical settings.

On the July service delivery call, five NFPRHA members who piloted offering the copper IUD as EC to all EC-seeking patients for six months will share their experience. Hear from the health centers' staff about the results of the pilot, including strategies for implementing this practice in your own health center. This presentation was offered during the 2014 National Conference.

If you would like to join the call on July 17 at 3:00 p.m. ET, please RSVP by completing the registration form.

Participants should call in to this meeting prepared to share their thoughts about offering the copper IUD as EC. If you have any questions or for more information, please contact Catherine Fish at cfish@nfprha.org or 202-293-3114 ext. 218.

Building, Implementing, and Sustaining Teen Pregnancy Prevention Efforts

people-outside.jpgBuilding, Implementing, and Sustaining Teen Pregnancy Prevention Efforts

Please join us on Thursday, Jun. 26 from 2-3 p.m. EST for a timely discussion of state examples of teen pregnancy prevention programming through the lenses of positive youth development, the program implementation life cycle, and disparity reduction. In recent weeks and coinciding with Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month in May, numerous federal partners and their grantees participated in webinars on teen pregnancy prevention activities, including on the topics of engaging males and prevention of subsequent teen pregnancies. As MCH programs consider their own efforts designing, coordinating, and evaluating teen pregnancy prevention programs within their state, this AMCHP webinar will highlight three state teen pregnancy initiatives at different stages of implementation, and will focus on their efforts to reduce disparities (by race/ ethnicity and urban versus rural) in teen pregnancy and childbearing, leveraging novel partnerships and outreach methods. This webinar is part of the AMCHP Women's Health Info Series, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Reproductive Health.

Featured speakers:

  1. Gabriel McNeal - PREP Coordinator, Adolescent & Youth Development Specialist, Minnesota Department of Health
  2. Benita Decker - State Adolescent Health Coordinator, Kentucky Department of Public Health
  3. Tiffane Raulerson - Teen Pregnancy Prevention Project Coordinator, Florida Department of Health

Please register here for the webinar. Web access and call-in information will be e-mailed to registrants in the week prior to the event.
