Quote of the Week

Never cut a tree down in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come.

Federal Teen Pregnancy Funding.

Earlier this week, the Senate passed a one-year extension of the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) and the Title V State Abstinence Education Program. The bill has already been passed by the House and is expected to be signed by the President.  Want more information?  Of course you do.

Benefits of Birth Control.

Our series of fact sheets on the benefits of pregnancy planning and prevention is growing.  Newly minted this week is a summary of unplanned pregnancy, abortion, and the benefits of birth control in America. The fact sheet centers on the following common sense proposition: Family planning is an effective way to prevent unplanned pregnancy-and because well over 90% of abortions are sought in the wake of an unplanned pregnancy, family planning also reduces abortion.

Integration of Sexual Health into Patient-Centered Care

New Toolkit Helps Healthcare Providers Integrate Sexual Health into Patient-Centered Care

To support health centers as they work to better integrate sexual health into patient-centered care, the Fenway Institute's National LGBT Health Education Center collaborated with the National Association of Community Health Centers to create a new toolkit,  Taking Routine Histories of Sexual Health: A System-Wide Approach for Health Centers. The toolkit provides resources for establishing the routine collection of sexual health histories during primary care visits, including: tips for putting the patient at ease; recommended screening questions and subsequent risk assessments; tips for how providers and other members of the clinical care team can be sensitive to and inclusive of special populations; and tools such as sample wording for intake forms, diagnosis codes related to sexual history and screening, and examples of how to incorporate risk assessment forms into electronic medical records.

According to a new study in the Journal of Adolescent Health, high school students who mentioned condoms or other contraceptives in text messages or other electronic communications were three times more likely to consistently use condoms during sex. The study of 176 high school juniors and seniors also found that students who discussed pregnancy or sexual limits via technology were more than twice as likely as other students to use condoms consistently.

Comprehensive Contraceptive Counseling
Comprehensive Contraceptive Counseling

Nearly half of all pregnancies in the U.S are unintended, and teens are at highest risk for experiencing an unwanted pregnancy. Does comprehensive contraceptive counseling affect women's decisions?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all women be "counseled about the full range and effectiveness of contraceptive methods for which they are medically eligible." A recent study found that 69% of 14- to 17-year-olds and 61% of 18- to 20-year-olds who were provided with contraceptive counseling that highlights the efficacy of various long acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods subsequently chose LARC over non-LARC methods. Many of the women in this study considered ease of use to be the most important factor in their decision.

A study of 1,000 15- to 20-year-olds revealed that following comprehensive counseling on all combined hormonal contraceptives, women were more likely to choose the vaginal ring or patch than oral contraceptive pills. However, women who had chosen the pill before counseling were unlikely to opt for an alternate method afterward.

Optimal contraceptive counseling should follow the principles of shared decision-making. Clinicians should offer comprehensive information about all contraceptive methods, honor patients' preferences, use patient-centered language, and address methods' ease of use.
