     Matsuri (Summer Festival)         Sun., Aug. 4, 10:30 AM - 9 PM   
The "MATSURI" ("festival" in Japanese) on Bainbridge Island celebrates the rich and unique culture of Japan through many great performances and workshops such as REAL SAMURAI from Japan, Biwa Japanese Lute Recital, The School of Taiko, Mimi Puppet Show, Shamisen Ensemble, Iaido, Noh, Sumie Brush Painting, Kimono/Yukata Picture Service, Kirie Cutting Paper Art, Origami, Soroban Abacus, Evening Ajikan Meditation, many kid-friendly activities etc  for entire families to enjoy all day. In addition, with the collaboration of IslandWood's chef, Jim White, we will offer "Zen Kitchen" meals (at an additional charge) prepared with fresh, organic, local, and seasonal ingredients. General admission is free; there is a fee for some classes and workshops.     
More...    National Night Out - Free Food, Music, Games & Prizes Tues., Aug. 6, 4 - 7 PM 
 
 
The Bainbridge Island Police Department invites you to celebrate the 30th annual "National Night Out" taking place that night with law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, citizens and local officials from all over the US, Canada, and military bases worldwide. 
The Bainbridge event is at Sonoji Sakai Intermediate School (9343 NE Sportsman Club Rd) and is open to all. For parents, festivities include live music, free crime and drug prevention awareness materials, and the opportunity to meet your local law enforcement officers to strengthen police-community partnerships. For children, festivities include free food and drink, a carnival style atmosphere with games and prizes, and equipment displays offering the opportunity to meet retired K9 police dog Rusty, as well as see inside a fire truck, an ambulance, police car, and police boat. Support is provided by local merchants and non-profit organizations alike. Whether or not you are able to attend, one way you can support the effort is to leave your front porch light on, which is a hallmark of the event.

  First Fridays Art Walk Bainbridge Library:"New Beginnings" paintings by Cleo Luther Forbes. Island Gallery: "North by Northwest" landscapes by Kathleen Faulkner with gypsy jazz by Ranger & the "Re-Arrangers"; Roby King Galleries: Max Hazelett; Bainbridge Arts & Crafts: The Big Bad Bug Show; Danger: 2013 Summer Studio Tour artists.    The Bard at IslandWood: The Tempest Aug. 1,3,4,6,7,8 at  7 PM  The  BPA Shakespeare Society presents The Bard at IslandWood; 2013 Play: The  Tempest The BPA Shakespeare Society will perform The Tempest for one week in  August at the Creaky Tree Meadow on the campus of IslandWood. Tickets are free, with donations to support Island Theatre appreciated.
 The first place and second place plays, "Assigned Blessing," by Connie Bennett, and "Super-Citizen and the Parking Space," by Steve Palay, will be performed both evenings. Six of the remaining plays will be performed on Saturday evening and six on Sunday evening. A complete list of the plays, along with playwright biographies, directors, and cast members, is attached.  Family fun with rides of different distances and PIE - both savory and fruit-filled. Bike for Pie includes both a family friendly and a more challenging route so there is something for everyone. The family friendly route is a flat-ish 6.5 miles one way outbound to the pie stop at Ft Ward Park.  Guides will be available - see website for details. The more challenging 32 mile round trip route features not one, but TWO pie stops, including one on the north end on NE Day Road, operated by Friends of the Farm. In celebration of  Bloedel Reserve's 25th Anniversary, we are loosening our picnicking restrictions and throwing an old-fashioned summer celebration! Bring your own picnic food and a blanket, and the Reserve will provide an unforgettable night. Dance and sway to live music under the twilight sky and try your skill with croquet, bocce ball and other lawn games. Children will enjoy special crafts and games just for them. And since no picnic is complete without a frozen treat, complimentary ice cream will be scooped by Viking Feast Ice Cream.
