We've gone pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month in honor of our founder Juliette Gordon Low (who passed away from breast cancer in 1927), all who have fought it, all who are at peace and all who have been affected by it. Go Pink!

Special Shop Hours    

The Girl Scout Shop at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center (811 N. Coker Loop, San Antonio, 78216) will be open from 11 a.m.-2p.m., tomorrow, Saturday, October 5.  Come on in and get your Girl Scout needs ... and perhaps pick up a few wants, too!

Mobile Leadership Center
is headed your way! 

All girls and their families are invited to join the excitement of Girl Scouts when the Mobile Leadership Center rolls through their area as part of Girl Scouts of the USA's National Recruitment Week.

 

Girls attending will participate in activities relating to healthy living, art, the outdoors and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).


Mobile Leadership Center

The Mobile Leadership Center, a 38-foot specialty vehicle owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, travels a 21-county area and includes a library of resources and equipment for adult volunteers, a mini-shop and 24 laptop computers for girl activities and adult learning.

  • 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, October 5 @ First Baptist Church, Boerne
  • 5-8 p.m., Monday, October 7 @ Texas Lutheran University, Seguin
  • 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 8 @ Hastings, Kerrville
  • 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, October 9 @ McKenna Center, New Braunfels
  • 5-8 p.m., Thursday, October 10 @ H-E-B (281/Evans), Honey Creek Service Unit
  • 5-8 p.m., Monday, October 14 @ Plaza Del Sol Mall, Del Rio
  • 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 15 @ H-E-B, Eagle Pass 
2013 Fall Product Sale is here!  

Girls are currently taking orders! Are you interested in earning fast start-up funds and having girls participate in Girl Scout Leadership Experience activities? The fall product sale is a quick "friends and
family" sale that runs now until October 13 when orders are submitted.

You are invited to High Tea 

You are cordially invited to attend an English High Tea at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13 at St. Matthew's Family Center (Room 106, 10703 Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, 78230).    

The Friends of Pax Lodge are raising funds to be used for Pax Lodge scholarships for girls and to assist with ongoing operating expenses.

Service and upgrade schedule

Please be advised that GSSWT's computer and phone network will be down for servicing and upgrades on Friday, October 18 beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at approximately 5 p.m. During this time, incoming/outgoing emails and phone calls will be intermittent. There will also be a second phase implemented approximately one to two weeks after phase 1 on October 18 is completed. Phase 2 will also require network down time between one and five hours. An exact date will be shared once it is confirmed.

Calling all aspiring girl artists! 

If your girls like to draw and be creative, this is an opportunity for them!

 

GSSWT is in need of an image to put on the front of a holiday card for the winter season. We plan to send this card to donors and other community members to thank them for their support of Girl Scouts. Here are the requirements:

  1. Don't be afraid to use color. 
  2. Must either be in a high-resolution JPEG format (created with Photoshop, MS Paint or other image editing software) OR original artwork on 8˝ x11" paper can be dropped off at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center (811 N. Coker Loop, San Antonio, 78216).
  3. Cannot depict a Christmas tree, stockings or any other religiously themed items (must be a generic, winter-themed card) OR must depict all religiously oriented holidays (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, etc). Snowmen and gifts are acceptable on non-denominational cards.
  4. Must be emailed to Brooke Johnson OR dropped off no later than 5 p.m., Monday, October 16. If you need to mail your creation (must be received by Oct.16 to be considered), please send it to
    Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, Attn: Brooke Johnson, 811 N. Coker Loop, San Antonio, TX 78216.

All submissions will be showcased at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center and the West Side Girl Scout Leadership Center.  

The winning design will also be showcased as the council's Facebook cover photo for the month of December.

6:30-8:30 p.m., Friday, November 8 -- open to girls in grades K-5

Wow! A glass slipper. Who could it belong to? Is it yours? Delight your imagination and be royalty for a day. Make your own tiara, wave your wand and poof, let's have some fun! Show who you are, become confident and have positive self-esteem. Join the enchantment of the magical place and be your own princess in your own fairy tale. That's ok! Girls are able to attend any of the dates -- the more the better! Simply register with the Volunteer Service Center before the next program date of Tuesday, October 8.

NEW!! Trainer of the Month Spotlight -- Emily Bee

Emily is a volunteer trainer from the Jackson/Nimitz Service Unit. She has been a trainer for 12+ years and has 20 years experience as a Girl Scout. Her training expertise is in Troop Leadership Essentials, Grade Level Essentials, Outdoor Education and Money Manager courses. One of Emily B Emily's greatest strengths is commitment and she loves shopping! Her favorite color is green and her favorite vacation spot is Las Vegas. When asked what she loves most about Girl Scouting, Emily says, "How rewarding it is to see the outcomes of our trainings with the girls and the adults." Thanks for all you do for us, Emily!

Native Words, Native Warriors
Family Day -- Saturday, October 19   

Institute of Texan Cultures invites all Girl Scouts and their families to the Native Words, Native Warriors exhibit for Family Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, October 19.

Families will have the opportunity to decipher language, culture and codes through puzzles and activities. Visitors may also hear from guest speakers who will discuss the role of Native American code-talkers in U.S. history. Get details here.

Wurzbach Parkway Progress

Keep an eye out for heavy equipment transportation in our area as construction on the Wurzbach Parkway extension continues to progress. Construction on Wurzbach Parkway is scheduled for completion in 2015.
