Ken Kobus, a third generation steelworker and author of the new book "City of Steel: How Pittsburgh Became the World's Steelmaking Capital during the Carnegie Era" will talk about the book, steelmaking in Pittsburgh, and share many photos of the steelmaking process. He will answer any questions you may have. This event is OPEN to the PUBLIC

FESTIVAL of COMBUSTION
Saturday, September 5 at Carrie Furnaces
Join in this family event for demonstrations and hands-on activities in glass flameworking, ceramics, molten lava, and bronze and iron casting. The Festival of Combustion includes live music, local eats, cold beverages/brew and lots of ice cream!
KIDS 18 and under get in FREE with accompanying adult.

The HARD HAT BALL

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the hard hat with live music performances, food from local purveyors, craft beer, and a hard hat art show featuring local Pittsburgh artists! Come early and stay late - watch the stars come out at the Hard Hat Ball!

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the hard hat, Rivers of Steel is offering a special general admission price of $19.15 on guided tours! Tour the Carrie Blast Furnaces at the former U. S. Steel Homestead Works and learn the real work behind the iron-making process from steelworkers who ran the furnaces at the Workshop of the World.

Steel City Grazers and Rivers of Steel recently established this on-site environmentally friendly project as an alternative to herbicides and fossil-fuel powered machinery to curtail overgrowth of weeds, brush and vines throughout the historic site. URBAN ART TOURS and GRAFFITI WORKSHOPS at CARRIE FURNACES
Fillins, King, Fat Caps, Pieces ...Shane Pilster of 82 Concepts introduces you to these graffiti terms and more during a special Urban Art Tour and Workshop at the Carrie Furnaces. Dive into the underground culture of graffiti, its history and how it continues to evolve today as an art form. The workshops give our guests a hands on experience with design, letter form, specific techniques, and painting with aerosol. A great idea for students grades 4 and up!

TOURS - August 22, and September 19
Steel history, an iron blast furnace tour, pierogies and a cookie table - explore the magical mix of immigrants and industry that made Pittsburgh the steel-making capital of the world!
The tour includes: an interactive presentation about the history of steel manufacturing in Pittsburgh: a guided tour of the awe-inspiring Carrie Blast Furnaces; a visit to the Historic Pump House, site of the 1892 Battle of Homestead and concludes with a delicious lunch featuring regional favorites such as stuffed cabbage rolls, pierogies and the beloved cookie table! Tours begin at 10 AM at Station Square (transportation provided). A portion of the proceeds benefits Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area.

An exciting and eclectic mix of regional artists has been selected for Alloy Pittsburgh 2015 at the Carrie Furnaces! A unique visual and performing arts initiative developed and administered by the Kipp Gallery at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in partnership with Rivers of Steel Heritage Area. Visit the Alloy Pittsburgh 2015 site for more about the program and this year's artists appearing at Carrie Furnaces.

Rivers of Steel and RiverQuest announce plans to merge
Rivers of Steel Heritage Corporation, managers of the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area, and RiverQuest which operates Explorer and its popular river-based environmental sciences program, announced that the two non-profit organization's boards of directors have approved pursuing a merger of the two organizations.

The Rivers of Steel National Heritage Corp. has preserved many industrial landmarks, including the Carrie Furnaces at the former U.S. Steel Homestead Works. "We made the American 20th century right here," said Ron Baraff, director of historic resources and facilities for Rivers of Steel.
