THE CARRIE DEER EVENT WRAP UP

Over 500 supporters joined us on August 16 for the SAVE the CARRIE DEER event on behalf of restoration of the 40' salvage art sculpture. Our partners and collaborators provided stellar treats, activities, beverages and entertainment for an evening of tours, photo-ops, giveaways and special lighting displays of the Carrie Furnaces and the Carrie Deer.

We thank our guest hosts, David Conrad and Rick Seback, for their eloquence in providing insight on the need for support of the restoration program and also the importance of our industrial heritage sites as places of community interaction, historical value and educational opportunities to future generations.

The Carrie Deer has endured 16 years of the site's evolution and survived scrap collectors, vandals, graffiti artists, weather conditions, and threats of destruction to emerge as a key focal point of revitalization for this National Historic Landmark site. The success of both this event and our efforts for restoration of the sculpture demonstrate the larger appreciation for the site as a community asset for which Rivers of Steel provides stewardship.

The success of the event, which included an open-air viewing of the newly released Carrie Deer documentary, demonstrates the variety of art-centric community opportunities available through the site. In upcoming months, Rivers of Steel is providing new opportunities to artists, preservationists, ecological organizations, alternative energy designers and community groups to engage in new and active ways with the site and its mission. We hope you will be a part of these new ventures in the months to come.

Our Carrie Deer Kickstarter restoration campaign is off to a great start, reaching the first goal in under 2 weeks! To ensure the Carrie Deer's continued inspiration to future generations, we ask that you share with friends your experiences at the Carrie Furnaces and the SAVE the CARRIE DEER Kickstarter link in support of restoration of this one-of-a-kind iconic sculpture.

IRON POUR at CARRIE FURNACES
Saturday, October 25
On Saturday, October 25th, molten iron will again flow on the Carrie Furnaces site!

This collaborative event with Carbon Arts, local Pittsburgh artisans and Rivers of Steel  provides a first-hand look at the process and skills of casting molten iron in pattern molds. This same process produced the iron that built our nation and many of the world's largest structures during Pittsburgh's legacy era as "Workshop of the World."  Tours of the site and other activities are planned for this unique introduction to the Carrie Furnaces historic industrial process in a small-scale venue.

This very special event includes the creation of two additional Rivers of Steel project elements:
SAVE the CARRIE DEER  Kickstarter Reward
  • SAVE the CARRIE DEER - pouring of the exclusive Kickstarter Rewards:  Carrie Deer Antlers
  • IRON GARDEN WALK - pouring of the 12 interpretive plaques to be installed on site in the new Iron Garden Walk

We welcome our SAVE the CARRIE DEER pledge donors to this one-of-a-kind event where they will meet the artisans and see the actual process of creating their reward selection.
