The day starts with a ribbon cutting on the trail near Sandcastle Water Park for the final mile of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), a 335-mile long bike path between Washington, DC and Pittsburgh. Following the trail dedication, the off-grid Pop-Up Party will begin at Noon until 10 PM Saturday featuring the city's hottest DJ's including Selecta, Tom Cox, Strobe, DJ Firefly, Hank D, Rick Diculous and Jared Tebbets with music solar-powered by ZeroFossil. Food trucks such as BRGR, Pittsburgh Taco Truck, Dozen Dessert Truck and OH My Grill, craft beers by Blue Dust, a special craft and art market, live bike demos and a bike swap meet are just some of the activities and events that will be at the historic site in The Waterfront. "The completion of the Great Allegheny Passage is a monumental event and will serve as a lynch-pin for tourism for the region and beyond," said Ron Baraff, Director of Museum Collections and Archives with Rivers of Steel. "The opening of the trail presents opportunities to all of the communities and businesses along its path. For the Rivers of Steel, it allows us to use the historic Pump House to open new doors and avenues for success and partnerships within the community." Then from 2 to 5 PM, The Waterfront will be hosting Pedal Party in Town Center with an outdoor steel drum band Rhythm 'n Steel, and local musical group Meeting of Important People, along with a bike decorating contest hosted by the Josh & Gab show and water-spraying power-generating bikes by ZeroFossil. Waterfront restaurants Gran Agave and Panera Bread will provide refreshments and snacks with giveaways, specials and activities provided by other Waterfront retailers. "The dedication of the Great Allegheny Passage is important for the City of Pittsburgh, Homestead, West Homestead and the surrounding areas," said Carole DeAngelo, General Manager of The Waterfront Shopping Center, adding that part of the Pedal Party will include the unveiling of new bike racks at the shopping center. "We are looking forward to celebrating this milestone ... and becoming a destination for cyclists and trail enthusiasts as a result of the Gap opening." Free courtesy shuttles will be provided from 9 AM to 6 PM to aid with visitors enjoying the Wheels in The Waterfront events, with shuttle parking available in the overflow parking lots at The Waterfront near Steak & Shake. All events are free and open to the public.
"Wheels at the Waterfront allows people from all over the region to come enjoy the site, learn about the trail and its amenities, to discover the history of the region, and most of all, have some fun," added Baraff.
