Q: What is the best ratio between cardio and toning?

 

A: For an ideal training program I would go 50% cardio and 50% toning/strength for these reasons.  

When it comes to burning calories cardio exercise has a slight advantage.  You'll burn 8 to 10 calories a minute doing toning/strength exercises with weights compared with 10 to 12 calories a minute doing cardio exercises.

On the other hand, strength training gives you a metabolic boost that lasts several hours after your workout because your body will work overtime helping your muscles recover. That means you'll continue burning calories for hours after the workout is done!  With cardio workouts the 'after workout effect' is much less.  

 

In my opinion both are equally important for your overall fitness level. Cardio exercise is essential in maintaining a strong heart, lungs and blood flow.  Toning/strength exercise is an excellent metabolism booster.

Take Your Training to the Next Level With Interval Training!

You can increase the calorie burn of your workouts with less time spent working out!  And you can raise your metabolic rate to burn more calories even after your workout is over!  

Interval training has been shown to support muscle growth, increase fat loss and increase the metabolic rate!

So what is interval training? It is really pretty simple. It consists of alternating high intensity exercise and low intensity recovery periods.

Here is a typical interval training cardio routine you can do on a treadmill anytime!

 

  • minutes 1-3: walk at 3.5 mph (0% incline on treadmill)
  • minutes 4-5: walk at 4 mph (0% incline on treadmill)
  • minutes 6-8: walk at 3.5 mph (4% incline on treadmill)
  • minutes 9-11: walk at 3.5 mph (6% incline on treadmill)
  • minutes 12-13: jog at 4.5 mph (4% incline on treadmill)
  • minutes 14-15: walk at 3.5 mph (0% inline on treadmill)

Maintaining a stable blood sugar level
Cravings are detrimental to anyone who is trying to lose weight successfully and they are usually caused by low blood sugar levels. The best way to win the battle on cravings is to maintain a stable blood sugar level throughout the day.  By eating unrefined complex carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits that are high in fiber, as well as lean proteins and essential fats you will maintain a steady blood sugar level and eliminate cravings.  Try to eat 3 regular meals a day along with a couple of healthy snacks in between and make sure you drink enough water during the day.

Simple changes in your eating habits will produce noticeable improvements very quickly.  You will be amazed at how quickly you will see and feel the changes in your body and energy level when you start eating the right foods on a regular basis.
