Ash Wednesday - February 10th
Two services - 12:10 and 7pm Invitation to Lent with distribution of ashes and Holy Communion - Chapel Ashes to Go - Malaga Cove Plaza, 2-3:30pm
Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. The ashes are applied to a person's forehead in the sign of the cross with the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Writings from the Second-century Church refer to the wearing of ashes. For more about Ashes to Go, click here...

Lent is another form of pilgrimage. It is an interior sacred journey toward Easter. It invites us into a sacred time. The season of Lent is meant to help us become even more the persons of God that we were created to be. During Lent contemporary Christians generally intensify their spiritual life, like a retreat in daily life. Many read the Bible more, pray and meditate more, give up something enjoyable, attend a study group, attend more (weekday) services at church, and give more generously to worthy causes. The church does not use "Alleluia" in worship during Lent, as well as flowers. There is sparseness and a starkness, to help orient us to what truly matters in life. When Alleluias and flowers return on Easter Sunday their reintroduction gives the Easter Season extra potency. Enter your Lenten pilgrimage with expectation as you embrace the transforming grace of God. With love and care for you all, Mo. Paula.

Do You Have Garage Space You're Not Using
We need storage space for the St. Francis Rummage Sale, one of our biggest fund-raisers. For the past several years Ruth Frank has graciously allowed us to use her garage to store the items sold later at the annual sale. That space is no longer available, so we now need floor-space - about 150 sq. ft. (10' x 15') - to replace it. If you have a garage space you would be willing to let the church use, please email Gloria Jones or call her on 310-375-8916, who has run the rummage sale for over a decade, or Clint Alley, Junior Warden (703-978-8778). The need is immediate - we already have people wanting to donate items for this year's sale (in August) - so if you can help, please let us know right away.

Need a prayer, or to talk with the clergy?
You are not interrupting our work -
you ARE our work!
Or just come to any or all of our services, and take a moment to sit quietly, light a candle in memory, or to symbolize your feeling, and let God be God - in you - for a few small, still moments. With blessings and prayers for comfort and love.
