Dental Anxiety
It is common for individuals to experience anxiety when visiting the dentist.
Between 9% and 20% of Americans actually avoid going to the dentist out of fear and anxiety. What brings on this anxiety? Many people fear the pain of procedures, the side effects of anesthesia, and fear feeling helpless and/or not in control. Also, some might fear the embarrassment and the discomfort they might feel due to the dentist being so close in their personal space.

 Biofeedback Therapy for Dental Anxiety
Biofeedback therapy helps alleviate symptoms of anxiety and stress-related struggles. The individual can be taught breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as monitor his/her physiological responses to stress. When the body is stressed or anxious, adrenaline courses through the bloodstream and causes the fight or flight experience. This includes elevated heart rate, increase in skin conductance, and rapid breathing. Biofeedback allows you to see the changes that your body experiences under stress, and teaches you how to manage those changes. Then, when sitting in the dentist's chair, one can apply what they have learned from biofeedback therapy and feel significantly more at ease. There have been several recent research studies regarding biofeedback for the treatment of dental anxiety. To read further about biofeedback, please visit our website. |

Biofeedback for Temporomandibular
Joint Disorder (TMJ)
TMJ are the joints located on either side of the jaw. Misalignment in the temporomandibular joints causes friction and wearing of the bones, which causes pain to develop. Those with TMJ Disorder experience aching, swelling, headaches, and difficulties with chewing.
Electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback helps one monitor his/her muscle tension through the use of sensors placed on the skin. Many people with TMJ grind or clench their teeth, which is called bruxism. Most people are not aware when they are doing this. Biofeedback devices can be used while awake or while sleeping. SleepGuard is a headband that uses EMG biofeedback techniques to eliminate bruxism while sleeping. |
