A Letter from Our Principals

Dear Clyde Hill Parents,

We are writing to invite you to join others from our school at Bellevue Schools Foundation's Spring for Schools luncheon on May 17th. This event at the Hyatt will bring together over 1,000 community members and celebrate what Bellevue schools and students have accomplished with community support. There will be music, a pre-event showcase, and inspirational success stories. Attending is a great way to learn more about the Bellevue Schools Foundation and how donors make a difference in Bellevue schools.

This school year the Foundation launched DreamBox, an award-winning math extension individualized program, in all elementary schools. It's receiving rave reviews from parents, teachers, and students. High school students and counselors now have access to Naviance, a renowned college and career planning computer program. College essay writing workshops, the debut of the Counselor in the Commons, and a college and career planning workshop series have also all launched this year.

These and more than two dozen other important programs, including many right here at our school, are possible because of the funding provided by Bellevue Schools Foundation.  For example, our fourth grade teachers are learning more about Washington State and Salmon with Peter Donaldson as a result of their generosity.

The Foundation raises money for investing in innovative opportunities for your kids, helping to make Bellevue schools some of the best in the country. Your donations today are providing amazing learning opportunities and support for all students, right now.

Please come to Spring for Schools on May 17th and join a table from our school. The Foundation's goal is to raise $570,000 at the luncheon - please know that they will ask each guest to consider a gift of $200 or more, but a gift at any level makes a difference for Bellevue kids. Corporate sponsors underwrite the expense of putting on the event, so every dollar donated by individuals goes toward supporting the schools.

You can register online at www.bellevueschoolsfoundation.org.  If you're not able to make it, please consider making a donation online.

We hope to see you there!

Christy Krutulis and Tara Gray

Handy Parent Needed

We need to anchor our medication bins (48 in all) to the medication cart to keep them in place should we take the cart out during emergency evacuation procedures. We hope to have some help with this from a handy parent. Our plan is to poke 2 holes through the bottom of the bins and anchor them to the cart with zip ties, so hopefully it will be someone who has an awl or equally sharp tool. We can supply the zip ties, but would need you to provide the awl.  Contact the main office if you can help: (425)456-5000.

Girl's Clothing for School Clinic Needed

Our school nurse, Karen Ruby, is requesting donations for emergency clothing in the school clinic. We are in need of girl's pants/shorts size 6-14.

Matching Funds - There's Still Time to Request Them!
Double your Dollars for Our Kids

Many companies match their employees' charitable donations, so looking for matching gift opportunities is a great way to boost the power of your fundraising effort. To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, check with your company's HR department.

Each company with a matching program has their own process for employees to request matching gift funds, but the process is very similar. The one point in common is this: if you donated to the Clyde Hill PTA during our recent Auction, then YOU have to be the one to request matching funds. Usually it's as easy as submitting a form (either online or in person to your HR Department), along with a copy of your paid receipt, check, or credit card statement.

Please take just a few minutes to ask if your company has a matching fund program and, if so, request your matching funds today!

Bellevue School District Information

School Board Vacancies

Did you know that many of our Clyde Hill parents live in District 3 and are eligible to run for this District's open School Board position?

The Bellevue School Board will have three open positions this year on the November 5th ballot.  Bellevue residents who live in District 3 (west-central Bellevue), District 4 (east-central Bellevue) and District 5 (south Bellevue) are encouraged to consider representing their community on the Bellevue School District Board of Directors. The Bellevue School Board of Directors is made up of five community members, one from each geographic region of the district.  Board members are elected to their district positions for a term of four years by registered voters.  In Bellevue, the School Board provides overall governance of the school district.  Its responsibilities fall into four major areas:  vision, accountability, structure and advocacy.  The filing period with King County Elections Office is much earlier than in previous years. The one-week filing period this year is May 13 to 17, 2013 - weeks earlier than the usual June filings.  What's involved?  Click here to learn more...

Teacher Contract Update

Members of the Bellevue Education Association and Bellevue School District Negotiations Teams have reached a Tentative Agreement on a new three year contract. Details of the agreement will remain confidential until ratified by the General Membership of the Bellevue Education Association and The Bellevue School Board.

Washington State PTA - Make Your Voice Heard

House Plan Implements Basic Education

Offers kids clarity and commitment; requires significant funds

Within the Washington State PTA, we are talking revenue.

When we helped pass the basic education funding bill in 2009 (HB 2261), and years earlier when we joined the group that sued the state for underfunding its schools, we knew we were asking for a significant investment in K-12 education. Billions of dollars, not millions.

We knew this because of the constant fund-raising and over-reliance on local excess levies.

In the years since 2009, we watched as budget cuts tore multi-billion dollar size holes in education, healthcare, and other essential community services. In the past three years, more than $10 billion has been cut from social services. Close to another $3 billion has been cut from K-12 education, resulting in school closures, overcrowding, neglected buildings, and the loss of services. We say it all the time but it bears repeating: The state doesn't even cover a basic six-period day in middle and high school.

That's a choice.

The state needs to start paying its K-12 bill, and it needs to be honest with the public about the costs involved and the legal requirements around state funding, as opposed to local excess levies. Because something happens when the state comes up short: Inequity becomes the norm and kids and communities who most need a leg up get left behind.

What the state (doesn't) fund

Washington State is 36th in the nation in overall obligation of state and local taxes. If Washington's budget had grown at the same rate as personal income over the past decade, the 2011-13 budget would have been $13 billion higher - more than enough to cover basic education and other children's needs.

Instead, we're near the bottom in funding public schools. We have some of the most crowded classrooms in the nation and our state funding structure is only designed to support learning through tenth-grade expectations.
