Principal News

Hello Clyde Hill Families:

Thank you for all your support in helping us get the 2012-2013 school year off to a great start. Teachers have worked hard to establish their learning and behavior expectations and your children are working hard to show their best each day. We appreciate your support by attending Curriculum Night, helping out with homework, and letting us know when you have questions. The more we communicate and collaborate around areas that are working, and areas of growth, the greater the positive impact on the learning of all students.

One particular area we need your help with, as mentioned at Curriculum Night, is our focus on attendance this year. Whether your child is a few minutes late or misses a whole day, it impacts not only their learning but that of their classmates. This Thursday is our first Monthly Attendance Award for the class with the fewest number of tardies and absences. Ms. Castaneda and Ms. Wiley's students have had the highest rate of attendance and will be the first recipients of the State Farm award and pizza lunch. They only had 3 tardies or absences. Congratulations! Overall we had 453 school-wide. We consider this too many and really need your help getting your child(ren) to school on time. Please let us know if you think there are other ways we might be able to motivate your child(ren) to get out the door in time for our 8:00 first bell. We're happy to help.

We also wanted to let you know we're making a bit of change in our after school routine. To provide a more orderly exit at the end of the day we will be having our bus riders line up in the covered area, similar to our morning routine. Each bus line will then be walked to the bus in a safe and orderly fashion. If you usually meet your child in the covered area you will still be able to do so, but just may need to make a small adjustment to the location.

Hope to see you all Friday at the Walk-a-Thon!

WSPTA 2012 Issues Survey

What should be on WSPTA's 2013 platform? What will help kids reach their potential? Take the WSPTA 2012 Issues Survey  and let us know.

Are we doing enough for special education students? What can we do about racial and income equity when it comes to the opportunity gaps? Should we prioritize bonuses for National Board certified teachers? What should we do about funding shortfalls? (Raise revenue? Fund education first in the budgeting process?)

PTA volunteers work in classrooms and communities across Washington, but we also advocate in Olympia and within our school districts for policies and funding to support children's well-being and education. Every June, members propose ideas they think the association should prioritize; and every October delegates from the PTAs gather to decide which ones to put on WSPTA's platform.

But before they can vote, they need your feedback. Your opinion matters: It will help shape PTA advocacy for the next two years. But hurry - the survey closes Sept. 30.

 After School Activities

Sponge Class

Getting your kids started on Spanish or Mandarin NOW is the way to go. It is engaging, fun and a program that really works. Give your kids the upper hand when they have to meet language requirements later! Middle and high school are already stressful enough - walking into the classroom with some foreign language is a great confidence builder. Your child will be ready to hit the ground running! Research shows that you're 70% more likely to reach competency in a language if you start in elementary school than if you start in high school.

Imagine going to a restaurant and ordering in Spanish, or welcoming a visitor to your classroom in Mandarin. There are about 1 billion Mandarin speakers and 500 million Spanish speakers around the world -- and your children can be a part of that! Our classes focus on building practical language and communication skills that your children can use right away. We learn through games, art projects, music, stories and drama.

Sponge will offer classes at Clyde Hill after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes begin the first week of October and run through the first week of June. Visit for more information and to register; email Sponge at info@spongeschool.com or call us at 425.274.5188 with any questions. Register now and secure your spot in class!  http://spongeschool.com/sign-up/

Parent Internet Viewer (PIV)

www.bsd405.org/piv

Many of you are eager to access our Parent Internet Viewer (PIV) to see student attendance and grades. What to do? Read on!

If you used your PIV account last year and changed your password (and remember your password!), you don't have to do anything else - the system is ready for you.

If you changed your password and have since forgotten it, you will need to email clydehillattendance@bsd405.org requesting that we reset your password. In the email, you will need to provide your name, your child(ren)'s name, teacher, and hopefully student ID. We are not able to do this over the phone.

New and Inactive Accounts simply need to click on the PIV link which will pull up the letter providing directions for activating your account.
