We're very excited to offer our Thursdays at Seven program this year as a way to meet and speak with nationally known authors who all have a connection to the Hudson Valley! In addition to this email, I will send you reminders and fuller biographies for subsequent authors.
Mr. Chen has visited the Library previously and has been an advocate for libraries on the State level. He is also an accomplished musician, calligrapher and public speaker. Don't miss out, register today.

Thursday, October 18 - Da Chen

Da Chen first came into literary prominence in 2001 upon the completion of his remarkable memoir of his early life in China entitled Colors of the Mountain. This was followed by the successful sequel Sounds of the River as well as three novels. Chen, who settled in New York's Hudson Valley, is also greatly sought after as an inspirational speaker.

His most recent novel, My Last Empress, was just published earlier this month by Crown Publishing. Early reviews are enthusiastic. Kirkus Review refers to Chen as "a master of suggestion by telling detail" and calls the novel "A lyrical tale of crossed borders, boundaries and destinies, expertly told." Library Journal posits "a wonderful tale of passionate obsession," and Booklist offers "Chen's lyrical prose enhances and deepens the eerie tone of this atmospheric melodrama."

In his new novel, Chen again travels to China but the story surrounds an American protagonist, Samuel Pickens. Chen also travels back in time and sets much of the action in the Chinese imperial court.

Come meet Mr. Chen at the Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 18 where he will speak about his new book. Autographed copies will be available for sale. Light refreshments will be provided. Please register for this event at 236-7272 and press 4.
