Message from Bob Henderson                        Friday, June 2, 2017

Dear friends:

Walter Brueggemann, a widely renowned Old Testament scholar, suggests that one mandate for ministers is to "de-script and re-script" the way people of faith see the world and our place in it.

In his book, Mandate to Difference, Brueggemann claims the world gives us a dominant script, a story through which we are to understand our lives, and that dominant script comes complete with promises to make us safe and happy.

In our society, that script is often based in extreme individualism and consumerism, two ideologies incapable of fulfilling such promises. Interestingly, the dominant script rarely mentions God, the need to address deep insecurities or unhappiness, or anything about salvation and the need to be made whole.

So, for people of faith, one of our primary tasks is to turn to the oft-mysterious stories of scripture in search of an alternative script, a life-giving script, a script that reminds us that God desires nothing less for all people than new creation and freedom from all that enslaves us.

This weekend, we'll look closely at one of the most astonishing stories in the New Testament and consider what script it offers our lives. In addition, the 11 a.m. traditional service will feature our Chancel Choir offering several magnificent pieces from Haydn's St. Nicolas Mass.

Our contemporary services will feature special pieces as well, as a large worship team gathers with Daniel Heath on his last Sunday at Covenant. All services will celebrate communion. It promises to be a memorable Sunday. Join us, and bring a friend.

Warmly,
