Message from Bob Henderson                        Friday, May 5, 2017

Dear friends:

There's a whole lot I don't understand about prayer, particularly when and how God answers prayer. I'm often surprised by answers to prayer, both their seeming fulfillment and God's audacity to decline my earnest request. In recent years, I've been more regular in my practice of prayer and set aside most mornings to pray for people and concerns dear to me.

Other times, my prayer life has been more... well,  let's call it 'incarnational." It happened at stop lights, in committee meetings, on airplanes (definitely!), in all the odd moments of an unfolding day. It's not that I was particularly lazy about prayer. It's more that I enjoyed an alternate discipline that infused my day with a sense of the divine.

I think both practices have their respective value, but the pressing question underneath any practice of prayer is "Does it work?" Will prayer alter things in any way? Does it change the circumstance, the illness, the relationship, the future?

Scripture records that Jesus not only taught about prayer, he practiced it regularly. In our passage this week, he suggests that it holds infinite possibilities, but none greater than our much-needed assurance that God cares, God loves, and God responds to our need as a loving parent.

This weekend, we'll explore the topic by considering this passage. We will also observe communion at all services and, as always, have the privilege of great music.

Come, and bring a friend.
