A Message from Bob Henderson Friday, December 9, 2016

Dear friends:
G.K. Chesterton, a great scholar with an equally fine sense of humor, wrote a book called "Orthodoxy" in which he describes the heart of God as being like a child. He says children have abounding vitality, free and fierce spirits, and - if you've ever dared to change a bed-time ritual, you know - need things repeated and unchanged. A child says "Do it again," and the grown up person does it again and again until the repetition finally lulls someone, usually the adult, to sleep. Adults are not strong enough to exult in monotony.
But, Chesterton suggests, perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning "Do it again" to the sun and every evening "Do it again" to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that every day is alike but that God has the eternal appetite to make them over again. It may be that God has the eternal appetite of infancy, the heart and spirit of a child.
It's a beautiful idea, that playfulness is at the heart of God. That God is less like a king on a throne and more like a child doing cartwheels. Maybe that's why scripture - from beginning to end - mentions joy as frequently as any other human emotion, because God is playful, joyful, and loves to laugh.
This week will be a full one in worship. We'll explore the notion of joy by looking through the lens of the movie "Elf." We'll celebrate a baptism; hear from Gwen Garnett, a strong leader in Charlotte, about an exciting new endeavor Covenant is launching; and, as always, enjoy some great music.
Warmly,
Bob Henderson, senior minister
