A Message from Bob Henderson Friday, November 18, 2016
|
Dear friends:
As the implications of the election take root, the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, the leaves turn, and the weather changes, I'm reminded of something Barbara Brown Taylor suggested: "reverence for creation comes fairly easily, but reverence for other people presents more of a challenge, especially if those people's lives happen to impinge upon our own." Confessing her own struggle, she writes, "I have an easier time loving humankind than I do loving particular human beings."
I think we know what she means. Love in the abstract is easy. I can easily love people groups, nationalities, and categories. But love in the particular is much more difficult: the family member around whom too much revolves, the co-worker who won't play by the rules, the child who forges her own rebellious path.
This week, we'll talk about the relationship between conflict and gratitude, an oft-under-explored combination. We'll do so by exploring two passages which you can read here. And, as long as you're clicking links, why not click here and complete this short survey? It takes about 5 minutes and we really want your input on the direction of Covenant's future. The deadline is a week away, and you're not going to get less busy between now and then.
I look forward to seeing you this weekend,
Bob Henderson, senior minister
