A prayer from Bob Henderson: Responding to our city's challenges

"In this hour and in the days ahead, may your voice ring in our ears and echo across our city, reminding us that our help comes from you..." Click here to read my prayer for our city.

What we're doing so far: Covenant is responding to our city's challenges with dialogue and action:
  • We've joined our friends at University Park Baptist and 225+ churches and institutions to sign a pledge to work on racial reconciliation over the long haul. The pledge notes that "the anger and pain are real," and "the work requires change in systems and structures." Learn more here.
  • I met Tuesday with a group of African-American men and retired CMPD Detective Garry McFadden in northeast Charlotte to develop a strategy for building trust among police and residents in the University City neighborhood where the Keith Scott shooting occurred.

  • We're joining a meeting including C.N. Jenkins Presbyterian, Myers Park Presbyterian, First Presbyterian and other invited congregations to solidify our work and strengthen relationships across racial lines.

  • We're speaking with the Women's Intercultural Exchange, a group of women working to bridge gaps and build friendships across cultural and religious lines. The group is interested in using our campus to hold conversations. Learn more about the group here.

  • We're exploring tangible themes arising from last Sunday's gathering with Jessica Patchett and Evan Amo and considering our best response. Many indicated an interest in getting involved, and we'll communicate opportunities to do so in the near future.
