A Message from Joan Watson                        Friday, September 23, 2016

Dear friends,

Salvation has, over the years, been much too narrowly defined. Its meaning actually has more to do with such things as healing, wholeness, restoration, reconciliation, forgiveness and peace (as in well-being) than it does with a particular destination "post mortem."

Scripture attests that God is our origin and destiny, but in addition, God is continually involved in healing humanity-- in body, mind, soul...and relationship. It is the ultimate healthcare. The ministry of Jesus lived out this multifaceted, transformative care, something the psalmist had declared centuries before.

This Sunday we will explore the promises of God and the call to be part of Christ's healing ministry in the face of human brokenness and disease. It is surely physical, mental, spiritual and emotional, but it is also clearly relational and communal; a very important word to us today.

In preparation, I invite you to read again Psalm 103 and Matthew 10:1-8 (the story of Jesus's first "great commission," the commissioning of disciples to join in his healing ministry).

Warmly,

Joan Watson

Associate Minister for Pastoral Care and Discipleship
