A Message from Bob Henderson                              Friday, Aug. 5, 2016

Dear friends:

When Jesus tried to get people to understand his way, he didn't begin by laying out five essential tenets of faith or insisting that his followers ascribe to particular theological affirmations.

Sometimes we wish he did -- that he just spelled out in unequivocal terms, "Here's the minimum requirement to be counted among my followers" -- but he didn't. Instead he told stories, met people at their points of pain,  painted word pictures, asked questions and did just about anything else he could think of to open people to embracing God's expansive love. It's a hard way to start a movement.

This week's scripture passage is abstruse (Click here to read it). It comes in the middle of a three-chapter conversation in John's gospel (not the easiest to understand) about the purpose of Jesus' ministry and mission. It also contains one of the most important sentences in the New Testament, and perhaps, all of literature.

We'll explore it in depth at all our services this weekend. In addition, we'll celebrate communion, introduce Rob Dicks, our new Assistant Director of Traditional Music, and participate in excellent music across all services. I encourage you to read the passage carefully and come prepared to engage.

See you on Sunday,

Bob Henderson, senior minister
