A Message from Bob Henderson                              Friday, June 24, 2016

Dear friends,

Some time ago, I stood behind a woman checking out at the grocery store. The young cashier handed her the receipt and said cheerily, "Have a nice day!" To which the woman replied, "I'm sorry, but I have other plans."

When I read this week's passage, I often feel the same way. Salt of the earth? Light of the world? Let my light shine so that others may see my good works and give glory to God in heaven?  Sorry Jesus, but I have other plans.

I've long thought the most perplexing dimension of Jesus' teaching is not his theology but his anthropology. Presbyterians may talk about total depravity but Jesus didn't spend much time there. In fact, quite the opposite: he suggested we are salt and light. Not that we act like salt and light, but that we are salt and light. Don't tell my seminary theology professor, but scripture strongly suggests that Jesus held a very high anthropology.

We'll explore it more in depth this weekend. Put on your thinking caps, read this passage, and come prepared to dive in.

I look forward to seeing you.
