A Message from Bob Henderson Friday, April 22, 2016

Dear friends,
As we continue our sermon series on the Psalms, I'm reminded of philosopher Blaise Pascal who concluded that there is a God-shaped empty space in every human heart, a faint memory, a hunger, a longing for the divine that nothing else can satisfy.
We don't always know what that is and are often reluctant to admit it. The Psalmist employs helpful language, "As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God." I liken it to standing in front of the refrigerator in your pajamas at midnight, "I'm hungry, but I don't know what I want."
Yet, that first acknowledgment, "I'm hungry. I long for something or someone..." is the first, and most essential, admission for a healthy spiritual journey.
More than fifteen-hundred years ago, St. Augustine (who before turning to faith went on his own rather destructive quest) wrote that when we acknowledge our thirst, our need, our own limitations and inadequacies, we have already begun to satisfy that thirst. "Our yearning anticipates landfall," he wrote. "Our yearning... throws hope as an anchor toward that shore."
This week we'll explore that inner longing and how we might address it. In addition, we'll welcome this year's confirmation class into full membership at our 11 a.m. traditional service, celebrate a few baptisms and enjoy great music.
