A Message from Bob Henderson                                  Friday, March 11, 2016

Dear friends:

Probably the most famous speech in the history of American sport was given by a generally silent Yankee's first-baseman named Lou Gehrig. Standing at a microphone on a day honoring him after a fabulous career, suffering from a horrible disease, he took the time to thank the vendors and ticket takers and workers who never got applause but made his job possible. And he said the words that echo still: "Today I consider myself the luckiest man of the face of the earth."

It's a remarkable statement, especially considering the circumstances. And, it's a worldview to which I aspire but have not come close to attaining. Though they are some of the most impoverished and least joyful, some days go by without any recognition of the extraordinary fortune that is my life... healthy children, a happy marriage, meaningful work, a beautiful world in which to serve and play.

This week, we'll continue our Lenten series on clearing a path to new life. Specifically, we'll explore the assumptions that ground our behavior and shape our perspective in hopes that we can live into the fullness of life God desires for us. In addition, we'll celebrate communion and hear of some great opportunities to serve.

Jen Christianson, who so ably preached during my recent trip to the Holy Land, will be preaching in the Chapel, and I will be in the Sanctuary services.

Join us and bring a friend,

Bob Henderson, senior minister
