A Message From Bob Henderson
Dec. 4, 2015
Dear friends:

My love affair with Christmas usually begins when I'm retrieving some Christmas boxes, the ornaments in the attic, the Christmas china in the bottom of the closet, and rather begrudgingly carry them downstairs to begin the annual Henderson Home Makeover. What starts as a chore inevitably transforms not only our home, but our family as well. As we unpack, we rummage through these artifacts and remember good times. It's striking how valuable simple items can become -- a  popsicle stick wreath with a child's toothless picture in the center, a crystal ornament passed down from generations, a nativity set with one piece carefully and clandestinely glued back to together -- family treasures which remind us that God is far more gracious and present and good than we deserve. And, more importantly, powerful reminders that this endeavor to be a family, to raise children, to stay married, and actually to love one another across decades and generations -- through the grace of God, a touch of good fortune and dumb luck -- does actually work, regardless of our worst fears and highest anxieties.

I think that's what real peace is. Knowing that across time and circumstance the God of all people works in our lives and thus, as the 14th century saint, Julian of Norwich, says, "All shall be well, all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."

We'll explore the biblical notion of peace at the two 9:30 a.m. services this week as well as the 11 a.m. service in the Fellowship Hall. I'll preach in the sanctuary and Perry Dixon will preach in the chapel using this text (Luke 3:1-6) as our basis.

In addition, we'll enjoy our traditional Service of Lessons and Carols in the Sanctuary at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Both services will feature brass, strings, the Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, and various assortments of children and youth choirs. It is sure to be a feast. If you've been considering inviting a neighbor or friend to Covenant, the evening service might be an easy invitation. Prelude music will start approximately fifteen minutes before the service.

I hope you'll join us for a great weekend.
