Celebration, Photos and Reception

Sunday at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Sanctuary Services

 

We'll celebrate babies born or adopted into the Covenant family during 2014 at both the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. sanctuary services. Parents of children, born or adopted in 2014, are invited to participate in a processional and blessing at the beginning of either worship service. Both groups will gather in the Fellowship Hall (107 A&B) for a reception from 9:45-10:45 a.m. A group photo will be taken in FH 207 at 10:15 a.m. If you would like to participate, RSVP to [email protected].

COVENANT CONNECTION
Wednesday Night Dinner at 5:30 p.m. 
New Classes at 6:30 p.m.

 

Each Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. we gather together as a church body to enjoy dinner and conversation. All are welcome and while reservations are appreciated, they are not necessary. Dinner is followed at 6:30 p.m. by a variety of classes for adults and youth. Tonight we feature 3 classes:

  • Scott TenBroeck, an elder care consultant, will discuss issues related to end of life decisions. FH 207
  • The Jesus Way: Stories of Struggle & Hope, FH 203
  • Healthy, Wealthy, & Wise, Parlor

Coming Up Next Week

In March, the Health and Wellness Committee presents a special series that examines ways of making proactive decisions regarding end of life issues. Next Wednesday, our own Dr. Joan Watson will discuss thinking ahead regarding funerals and end of life celebrations. FH 207.

INTERFAITH COOPERATION 

Eboo Patel

Friday, March 20, 9 a.m., Queens University

 

Eboo Patel will speak on the Queens University campus on Friday, March 20, at 9 a.m. Patel is a Chicago resident of Indian-Muslim descent who is a globally recognized leader for interfaith understanding and cooperation. Queens is pleased to host him as a Witherspoon Lecture speaker. His talk is called "The Art and Science of Interfaith Cooperation." The event is free, but online registration is appreciated.

HEALTH & WELLNESS SERIES 

Dr. Julian Tullis

Sunday, March 22, 6:30 p.m. in FH 207

 

Dr. Jillian Tullis from UNC-Charlotte will discuss the importance of healthcare planning while you are young. Dr. Tullis teaches classes about health communication and the role of culture and spirituality in shaping how we understand and talk about health. She will focus on the need to address end of life issues at a young age, citing examples such as Terry Shiavo. Dinner will be served at no cost. We hope you'll join us for this important information.

TAIZE SERVICE 

Of Healing and Wholeness

Wednesday, March 25 at Noon in the Chapel

 

All are invited to the Taize Service of Wholeness in Christ: Living from a Peaceful Center. Worship will include sung and spoken prayers, readings from scripture and other writings followed by silent reflections. Each service concludes with the celebration of Holy Commuion and the dedication of prayer shawls for people experiencing difficult times. Come and seek God's voice in a busy world. Come and receive spiritual nourishment.

SUMMER FUN DAYS
Preschool Summer Camps

Registration Ends Friday, March 20 

 

Covenant Preschool is holding three weeks of summer camp for preschoolers up through rising kindergarteners and currently enrolled toddlers. Join us for relaxed creative play experiences that include music, art, and outdoor activities and My Gym. We will meet each day, Monday-Friday, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Camp weeks are June 1-5, June 15-19, July 6-10. Register by visiting the Preschool page of our website.

SMALL GROUP STUDIES 

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

Feb. 24-March 25 

 

This Lent, we'll journey together through the Psalms using Eugene Peterson's book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction and the accompanying discussion guide. Options for groups include: 

  • Tuesday at Covenant 12-1p.m. in Fellowship Hall
  • Tuesday Uptown Bible Study at The Foundation for the Carolinas, 12-1p.m.
  • Thursday South Park Bible Study at Sharon Towers, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
  • Friday, 9:30-11 a.m. in the Parlor (Ladies Bible Study)
Making Marriage Work

Sunday, March 1-March 29, 6-7:30 p.m., EW 201

 

Based on the book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, this 8-week class will look at typical stages of marriages, qualities that can help create a safe haven within your marriage, discuss the importance of friendship, communication skills and conflict resolution as well as what it means to live out 1 Corinthians 13 with God's grace. Child care is available.

STAFF NEWS 

Addie C. Rising

Director of Communications

 

We are pleased to announce that Addie C. Rising has accepted the Director of Communications position and will join the Covenant staff on Monday, March 30. Addie graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia School of Journalism with a major in journalism and a minor in religious studies. She is currently an East Coast Staff Editor for FOX Sports and has more than 15 years' experience managing content and projects for media outlets including CBS/SportsLIne.com, BizJournals.com, Charlotte Magazine, and DigitalLanding.com. Addie is excited about joining us and being an integral part of a collaborative team to accomplish our goals. Addie is married to Kurt and they have three children - daughters Avery (12), Ella (11) and son Joey (6).

Middle School Youth Director

 

The Director of Middle School Youth Ministries oversees and implements all aspects of education and programming for youth in grades six through eight. This includes, but is not limited to planning, conducting, and evaluating all aspects of programming.  The Director of Middle School Youth Ministries will be the voice for both the needs and the faith development of youth. MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND
To Honor Susan and Steve Talley  

 

In honor of the extraordinary skill and faithful spirit Susan and Steve Talley have brought to Covenant's music ministry, the Personnel and Finance Committees have approved the establishment of a scholarship fund in their honor. The Susan F. and Stephen J. Talley Music Scholarship will provide funds for the study of traditional church music through a seminary or college, organ study at an intermediate or higher level, and/or church music conference participation by high school Covenant youth interested in learning more about traditional church music. The Covenant Scholarship Committee will oversee the application and awards process for this scholarship once it is funded. 

 

Contributions to fund the Susan F. and Stephen J. Talley Music Scholarship may be made payable to Covenant Presbyterian Church with Talley Scholarship noted in the memo line.

 

Join us in Fellowship Hall on April 12, 2015 following the 11 o'clock worship services forat a congregation wide reception to celebrate the ministries of Susan and Steve Talley. A presentation of the total scholarship donations received prior to April 10 will be made to the Talleys at the reception April 12; however, donations to this scholarship fund may be made after such date as well. 

MEN'S SHELTER DINNER
Serve in the Community

Tuesday, March 31 

 

Volunteers from Covenant will serve dinner at the Men's Shelter of Charlotte on Tuesday, March 31. Texas Hash casseroles desserts and fresh fruit are needed, and people (older than 18 or 12 if accompanied by a parent) are invited to come serve the meal at the shelter. Texas Hash and desserts can be prepared at home at anytime and stored in a church freezer in Fellowship Hall. The recipe can be found on our website.

CAMP PARENTS NEEDED
Highland Renaissance Academy

Tuesday, April 14 

 

We need "Camp Parents!" Each year we send underprivileged students from Highland Renaissance Academy to the YMCA for a week of camp. We need volunteers who will meet their camper for camp night on April 14 to help them fill out forms, and who will make sure they get to Covenant to catch the bus to camp with all of their required items. To volunteer or to receive more information, contact Petra Wahnefried

 

LOAVES AND FISHES
Food Drive

Sunday, March 29 

 

On March 29 we will collect food to donate to Loaves and Fishes. Paper bags will be handed out after the worship services on March 15 and 22 with a list of suggested foods. If you would like to help, please fill the bags with these or other non-perishable food donations (no glass jars, please). Food will be collected on Sunday, March 29. Food can always be left in the Rec Wing in the red bin marked Loaves & Fishes.

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
Graduate and Undergraduate Students

Now Being Accepted 

 

For many years, Covenant has awarded scholarships to deserving students for undergraduate and graduate studies. The Douglas E. Matthias Scholarship Program provides need-based support for rising freshmen and sophomores. Scholarships are also available for study at Union Seminary and any graduate study that leads to a life of Christian service. Students who are interested in being considered for the 2015-2016 academic year are asked to complete and submit the appropriate application form found on the Covenant website or by contacting the church office. Forward completed applications to the attention of Bill Keith in the church office or via email to [email protected]. Undergraduate applications are due no later than Monday, April 20, 2015. Applications for seminary or graduate study are due by Monday, June 15, 2015.
