Weekend Update

from Bob Henderson

Friday, Dec. 5, 2014

Dear friends:

Music has long been my muse. I listen to be inspired and to relax. I listen to pray, to write, and even to add a desperately needed dimension of pleasure to mundane household tasks. Simply put, music evokes a fuller dimension of life's goodness.

Scripture is filled with musical texts, canticles, psalms, and early Christian hymns that reveal something of the spiritual life of God's people. This weekend and in the coming weeks of Advent we'll turn our attention to the earliest songs of Christmas, beginning with the Annunciation, which you can find here in Luke's gospel

These rich texts are more than ancient reminders of time and circumstance. They are rich resources that speak to the human longing for God. This week's text is remarkable in that it claims a direct encounter between heaven and earth, and it suggests how we might encounter something of the divine as well. We'll look at it closely and see what it has to offer us on a personal level and with our families. We'll also consider what it might offer our society in this time of heightened racial and economic stress.

In addition to four great worship services on Sunday morning, our annual Lessons and Carols services will take place in the sanctuary on Saturday and Sunday night. The services begin at 5:00 with music of the season beginning at 4:30. Come, and bring a friend.

Warmly,
