Weekend Update

from Bob Henderson

Friday, Sept. 26, 2014

Dear friends:

One of my favorite theologians, Woody Allen, once responded to questions about his cynicism by saying, "The lion and the lamb may lie down together, but odds are on the lion getting back up."

It's true, isn't it? Experience is a great teacher, and it teaches us to bet on the lion every time.

Yet, faith suggests that God is also operative in this world, and where God is alive, so is hope. Thus, as people of faith we hope for a world where past is not necessarily prologue, where forgiveness transcends the lessons of experience, and grace - in our relationships, our faith, our families - is the norm. As Mitri Raheb, who will preach for us this Sunday, said, "Faith can imagine a vegetarian lion."

We're fortunate to have this brave, resilient, and bright Christian leader to bring us a hopeful word this Sunday. We'll have guest musicians (along with our regular musicians) in our Sanctuary services, three baptisms at our traditional service, communion in our chapel service, and continued innovation in the new service in the Fellowship Hall. It promises to be a great day. You can prepare by reading the text here (Matthew 17:20-21).

Come and bring a friend,
