Dear ,

Wayne

The summer festival season has come to a close for us. It has been a joy to have so many of you come by our booth at its various locations throughout the summer. It's been a quieter art season for us this year since we didn't do the Umpqua Valley Art Association (UVAA) festival in Roseburg; but, I did enter a picture in the open membership show there for the first time. My Wood Duck on Otters Pond looked right at home when we stopped by to enjoy the show.

One of my biggest satisfactions this summer has been the completion of a 7-year quest to find and photo-graph all 51 bridges recognized by the Oregon Covered Bridge Society. I really don't plan to draw all 51; there are too many other things on my want-to-draw list. But... we have really enjoyed all our day-trips and side-trips to get them all in front of my camera. Ahh! We did it!

Debbi also 'did it' when she graduated from Oregon State's pre-vet program in June and was accepted into their College of Veterinary Medicine. My drawing of the OSU Memorial Union is in her honor. I am so proud of her!! That was very satisfying!

Unlike most of my work, this piece is all black & white. It was a hard decision to make, but with all the brick on the OSU campus, I felt like if I used color, it needed to be the brick. I just was afraid if I made it true to color, it would not look right with any orange that may be used in the matting and framing.

Since I drew this to be framed with Debbi's diploma, I will be making it available that way for others as well. Right now it is only available as a print. It will be available in the near future with an option of adding a diploma or certificate. I'm still researching available matting/framing possibilities. (You can find the prices for the various sizes and formats on our Pricing page. See Quick Links above.)

Thanks again for your continued support of my art and enabling us, in turn, to "draw hope God's kids". This time of year, much of that help is in the form of school supplies for kids in need. Have a great fall! And all you teachers and students, have a great school year!

Get all the advice and instruction you can,

and be wise the rest of your life.

 ~Proverbs 19:20    (NLT)

Every pen stroke in this drawing is packed with  emotions and memories. I especially remember the day my dad and I visited Oregon State University when I was in high school and we had a milkshake at the Memorial Union. I met Kathy in the Weatherford Cafeteria where we ate all our meals. (Yes, there was one then; and, yes, that was the only place our meal ticket was valid. My, how things have changed!) We were married the summer before we graduated.

Now that we live only about 12 miles away, we often visit campus and think back to those times spent in and around the MU. We remember: the awe we felt as new freshmen walking across the quad in front of it; the day we sat glued to the TV at the MU Commons and watched Terry Baker run the length of the field to win the Liberty Bowl; quiet moments in the lounge; the 'coke dates' of first love playing cribbage in the Commons because that was all we could afford; and the carillon at 5:00 and on game days. We loved the carillon! It's still a thrill to be on campus when it plays. And then, of course, there was our graduation processional in 1965!

Memorial Union is so full of memories! This drawing, however, is in honor of our younger daughter, Debbi, who always wanted to be a Beaver from the time she was just a little girl. But, when she graduated from high school...

Memorial Union is drawn in pen & ink with no color added. It took 34 hours to complete; click on the picture to see a larger image. This 12" x 8.5" original drawing will sell for $1360. If you'd like to see this drawing in person, please let me know!

A Quest Accomplished

Our day-trip to Roseburg to see the wood duck hanging in the UVAA show allowed us the opportunity to also visit and photograph the Milo Academy Covered Bridge east of Canyonville. The Oregon Covered Bridge Society recognizes 51 bridges of historical interest and we had already visited 49 of them. With only one left after Milo, we had no choice but to go find it too! And, after all, we had to go south again anyway to pick up Woody.

So, as soon as the Art & Air Festival was over, off we went to find the McKee Bridge in the mountains between Grants Pass and the California border. As long as we were going to be that close to Crescent City, CA, where we lived for 45 years, we went down the coast first to visit friends and then on over the mountain to check off that one last bridge. (We hadn't visited that one yet because when we were living in Crescent City, we always said we could go see that one anytime. We always focused on those farther north. Then we moved to Albany!)

Now I have photos of all 51 bridges. I wonder how many I will actually draw. For now it's fun just to enjoy having accomplished the quest of finding and photographing the whole list.
