For the Son of Man came
to seek and save those who are lost.
The Lost Creek Bridge is believed by some to be Oregon's oldest covered bridge. For sure, it is the shortest of the 51 bridges recognized by the Covered Bridge Society of Oregon; it measures just 39 feet long. The bridge is located near the tiny community of Lake Creek a few miles south of Highway 140 in southern Oregon. If you visit be sure to take a picnic to enjoy at the adjacent Walch Memorial Wayside.
Lost Creek Bridge was nearly destroyed in the Christmas Flood of 1964, a perilous time for many bridges in the Pacific Northwest. Many believe this one was saved by prayer; other bridges were not as fortunate.
We have identified with bridges that were threatened by that storm. We were attending Oregon State University at the time, and were joining Kathy's family on Christmas Day at her grandparents' home in Portland. As we got into Portland they began announcing on the radio that they were preparing to close some of the big bridges in downtown Portland due to debris backing up behind them. We wished everyone a Merry Christmas, shared the news, and broke up the party; all headed for various homes in Portland and Rainier.

We Have Covered Bridge Calendars!!! |
The Covered Bridge Society of Oregon recognizes 51 bridges; we have found and photographed 49 of them. But, the quest has not ended; we will find those other 2 as well. I enjoyed working on this project, but I didn't think it would take so long to complete a calendar. A big thanks to those of you who have waited so patiently!
Occasionally I had to put the bridges aside to draw a commissioned piece or a Christmas card. While sitting at a show I like to work on something of local interest or draw a flower to satisfy my passion; but, I loved drawing the bridges. I tried to put as much detail into each one as possible. It was fun to decide which bridges to include in the calendar as I drew a seasonal picture for each month. I tried to cover as much of the state of Oregon as possible while considering requests and special memories... all the time staying within the 12-month limit.
This has been a fun work in progress. I hope you enjoy the result as much as we do. The calendar will debut as a 2014 edition and will be available for the first time on May 4, 2013, at the Mom's Weekend Art Festival at OSU.
