BISD exceeds state in
all areas of ACT

ACT scores for 2012 were released today, and BISD's composite score of 21.4 for English, mathematics, reading and science is higher than the state average of 20.9. Average scores on the individual portions of the tests were:

  • English - BISD scored 20.3 as compared to the state at 19.8;
  • Mathematics - BISD scored 21.8 as compared to the state at 21.5;
  • Reading - BISD scored 21.5 as compared to the state at 21.0; and
  • Science - BISD scored 21.5 as compared to the state at 20.9.

Individual campus scores were 22.1 for Birdville High, 19.4 for Haltom High, and 22.5 for Richland High. A total of 501 BISD students took the test in 2012, which is a 20 percent increase over the number of students tested in the district in 2011.

"BISD is proud of the students who continue to show improvement on state and national tests," said Superintendent Dr. Darrell G. Brown. "Birdville is committed to continuous improvement, and we are implementing curriculum improvement in our pre-advanced placement and advanced placement courses and content areas to improve college readiness."

Affordable Care Act

On July 15, 2013, the IRS issued Internal Revenue Bulletin 2013-29.  The bulletin provides transition relief for employees who are eligible to enroll in employer-sponsored, non-calendar year plans.  The individual penalties for failing to have health insurance coverage will not take effect until the first day of the 2014 plan year.

  • The transition relief means it is no longer pressing that employees enroll in ActiveCare during August 2013 open enrollment.
  • Employees in covered districts will not be subject to a penalty for failing to have coverage until the first day of the 2014 plan year.  For ActiveCare districts, the first day of the 2014 plan year is September 1, 2014.
  • The transition relief applies only to districts with non-calendar year plans, such as ActiveCare.

BISD implements additional security measures at elementary and middle schools
When students, staff and parents return to BISD's elementary and middle schools on Monday, Aug. 26, they will have a new door intercom and access system waiting to greet them. In May, Birdville ISD's board of trustees approved the installation of door intercom and access systems at the main entrance at each elementary and middle school campus. This new system allows these campuses to lock all external doors during the school day, thus restricting access into the building through one central location.
