Spring Mixer Wrap-Up
These fun networking events just keep getting better and better with more members attending each successive event to talk up their business, find out what other Members have done and are planning and getting the latest Chamber news.

At last week's Mixer, 52 Members and their guests, as well as Mayor Bill Weber, Deputy-Mayor Elizabeth Davis-Dagg, Economic Development Committee member Paul Wilson and Louie DiPalma from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce congregated in the "Poker Room" located below Dave's Clubhouse at Oakwood Resort.

The venue offered a great view of the golf course, lots of seating and support for a visual presentation as well as a private bar for our event. Fabulous appetizers were on-hand to taste and test.

Celebrating 65 Years

Blue Water Motel
, the event's sponsor, had some special news to share with fellow Members. They are celebrating 65-years in business. The Boogemans Family was represented by current managerial team of Laura and Mark Boogemans who inherited the mantel from Xavier and RuthAnn Boogemans.

Mark Boogemans provided an intimate and witty retrospective of Blue Water Motel over the years with great photographs illustrating various developments in the Motel from 1949 to today.

Over the time we've held these networking events, the Members' Showcase has grown from a single table displaying a few brochures to two tables offering a variety of promotional materials for sharing with fellow Members. The Showcase helps your fellow Chamber Member learn about your business and potentially their knowledge of you could lead to a business opportunity or sale or reservation.

Accessibility Workshop FREE to Members

When: Tuesday, May 20 - stay tuned for the start time!
Where: Pine Dale Motor Inn
Who: Presented by Louie DiPalma, Ontario Chamber of Commerce

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) was passed in 2005 with the goal of making Ontario accessible for people with disabilities by 2025. Ontario businesses needed to comply with the Customer Service Standard by January 1, 2012. Many organizations with 20 or more employees were required to report their compliance by December 31, 2012.

On January 1, 2008 the Customer Service Standard came into effect (part of AODA). It sets out the obligations for businesses and organizations to provide goods and services in a way that is accessible to people with disabilities.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce designed a workshop called "Accessibility Works" to help businesses be informed of their responsibilities under AODA and the Accessibility Standard for Customer Service and to help make compliance a much easier task.

On Tuesday, May 20 at Pine Dale Motor Inn, Louie DiPalma from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce will walk you through how you can be compliant with this legislation and not tear your hair out at the same time.

According to DiPalma, the Act is not as overwhelming as may first appear and with a little guidance most businesses can easily ensure they are meeting requirements.

As soon as a time for the workshop is finalized we'll announce. In the meantime, mark your calendar! 
BEST Bloomin Business
The Chamber is joining with the Forest BIA in encouraging local businesses to beautify their location in preparation for judging by
Communities In Bloom
International Judges through a floral décor based contest.

All area businesses are invited to register for the contest and participate by using the Communities in Bloom
2014 colours of red and white
to decorate window boxes and containers. There will be three BEST Bloomin awards, one in each category of
  1. "Ultimate BEST Bloomin Business",
  2. "BEST Bloomin Window Boxes" and
  3. "BEST Bloomin Containers".
Entries must be received on or before May 15 and contest judging will take place in June prior to the International Judges visit in July.

All registered businesses will be listed in the Lakeshore Advance or Forest Standard with the WINNERS garnering extra attention!

Food Handlers Course

When: Monday, May 12
Time: 9am-4pm
Where: Gables, Grand Bend
Cost: $40

The Food Handler Certification Program is designed to teach food handlers the general principles of safe food handling. This course will provide the food handler with the basic knowledge to identify risk factors associated with food borne illness and the skills necessary to handle food in a manner that will prevent illness from occurring.

The course is based on the principles of sanitary food service and hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) procedures.
