Bulletin
Reminder for Boatyards with the General Discharge Permit
  1. Boatyards with the Permit must sample storm water (e.g. rain/snow) once a quarter and record the findings on the "monitoring form" provided by MD Dept. of the Environment (MDE).  Staff must keep the monitoring forms on site in case of inspection by MDE. Instructions and forms are available on their website.
  2. Boatyards that discharge water from pressure washing boat bottoms must professionally test two samples during this fall washing season.  Boatyards have until December 31 to collect and test the samples. They then must report the findings to MDE no later than January 28th on the "Discharge Monitoring Report" forms they provided. The legal limit for oil and grease is 15 mg/L and for total suspended solids is 50 mg/L. Limits for dissolved metals take effect March 1, 2015. Boatyards should plan to eliminate their discharge by this time.
  3. As soon as the the discharge of boat wash water is eliminated, boatyards should notify Mr. Ed Gertler at MDE, so that they can be exempted from future testing and reporting.

Contact Ed Gertler at MDE with any questions or for replacement reporting forms:  [email protected]  or 410-537-3651.

$$ Grant Proposals Requested  $$

At least $10 million targeted for urban restoration projects

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is seeking proposals from local governments and non-governmental organizations that will help reduce storm water run-off in areas impacted by prior development. The State will award at least $10 million for efforts that will help reduce sediment and nutrient pollution.

The Clean Marina Program urges marinas and boatyards to partner with local non-governmental groups (e.g., a local creek Conservancy, your marine trades group, etc.) to obtain funding for projects such as rain gardens to filter run-off from parking lots.

One Clean Marina, 222 Severn Avenue in Annapolis, just completed such a project with the Spa Creek Conservancy. Partnering with a non-profit group made the marina eligible for grant funds to improve their landscape for the benefit of the Chesapeake Bay!

Applicants must submit Intent to Apply letters by November 15, 2013 and full proposals by January 31, 2014. For more information and to apply visit http://dnr.maryland.gov/trustfund/capitalgrants.asp
