Maryland Clean Marina Initiative
Bulletin

Greetings!   bottom cleaning

Important Reminder!

Boatyards that discharge bottom wash water to State waters have until Sunday 6/30/13 to professionally test their waste water.  Please disregard this notice if your marina does not have the Permit or no longer discharges waste water.

From page 15 of the Discharge Permit for Marinas:

As of September 1, 2012, all wastewater generated from boat bottom washing activities shall be captured and directed to one or more locations for treatment.  Metals (copper, zinc, lead) shall be sampled twice during the main washing season (September - December).  Suspended solids (TSS) and oil & grease (O&G) shall be sampled twice during the main washing season and twice during the spring/summer season for a total of four times a year.

Numeric limits for TSS and O&G in the waste water discharge took effect  March 1, 2013 The limit for TSS is 50 mg/L and the limit for O&G is 15 mg/L.  Numeric limits for metals take effect March 1, 2015.  Prior to the effective date of the limits, all wastewater shall continue to be treated using reasonable measures, such as straw dam filters, geotextiles, settling basins, or sand filters to remove visible solids.

Laboratory testing results should be transferred onto the "Discharge Monitoring Report" (DMR) form that was provided to you with the Discharge Permit information.  The DMR must be submitted to the MD Department of the Environment by July 31, 2013.  See page 24 of the Permit for more information.
