Two New Clean Marinas Certified!

Stoney Creek Bridge Marina in Baltimore and KB Derr & Son in Lusby (CA county) both earned the Clean Marina Award this winter.  The two new Clean Marinas are very similar in that they are fairly small, family-owned facilities that provide boat and engine repair.

To earn the award Stoney Creek Bridge manager Chuck Miller designed a wash water containment system for washing boats and increased the outreach to his on site contractor and slip holders.  At KB Derr & Son, owner Justin Derr built containment around his oil and antifreeze recycling drums, designed a system to capture his boat wash water, and improved rules for yard customers.

Maryland now has 149 certified Clean Marinas and Clean Marina Partners.  The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) oversees the Clean Marina Initiative, a voluntary program that promotes and celebrates efforts of marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs to reduce their pollution.

Each of the 149 certified facilities has adopted a significant portion of recommendations in the Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook and passed a rigorous site inspection. Certifications are good for three years, at which time DNR staff re-inspect the marinas. Marinas and boatyards of any size can participate.

Reminder General Discharge Permit 10-MA Reminders and Dates

1)  Storm Water Sampling

Marinas that have the General Permit for Discharges from Marinas are required to collect quarterly storm water samples.  The first quarter of the year ends March 31stTime is running out for any affected boatyard or marina that has not taken a sample in the first quarter of 2013 yet.

Storm water sampling is a simple procedure, conducted by marina staff.  The required form to record the sampling along with instructions are available here.

2)  Discharge Limits for Total Suspended Solids and Oil & Grease are NOW IN EFFECT

As of March 1, 2013 marinas/boatyards that are discharging boat wash water to waters of the state must meet the following limits for Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Oil and Grease (O&G):

Total Suspended Solids Limit:  50 mg/L

Oil and Grease Limit:  15 mg/L

Facilities discharging boat wash water to state waters were required to test the discharge for TSS and O&G, along with dissolved metals, twice during the fall 2012 washing season, and report the results to MD Dept. of the Environment (MDE) by January 28, 2013.  Facilities that exceeded these limits in the fall must take steps to further clean/filter the water to meet the limits from this point forward.

Facilities discharging to state waters must also professionally test wash water discharged twice between January and June for TSS and O&G only.  Test results must be submitted to MDE by July 28th.   If the marina does no washing this spring, it must still submit the required"Discharge Monitoring Form" to MDE, and check the "No Discharge" box to remain in compliance.  These forms were provided to each marina/boatyard when they received notice of coverage under the Permit.

shrinkwrap
Shrink Wrap Recycling Options

In Anne Arundel county, boaters can recycle shrink wrap in curbside bins at home.   Most counties on the Eastern Shore will recycle the wrap if it is brought to a landfill.

Marinas should contact their county office of solid waste to learn about municipal options in your specific area. The Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook also has a list of county recycling coordinators here

In many areas, marinas can contract with their private waste haulers to set up a separate dumpster for shrink wrap recycling.  A reasonable way to offset this expense is to charge customers (or outside contractors) a small fee of $2-3 when the boat is wrapped to pay for recycling.

The Clean Marina Program has decals showing how to remove shrink wrap for recycling.  To request a supply, send an email to [email protected]recycle sticker
