Four girls selected to participate in Girl Scout Leadership Institute

Four Girl Scouts from southeast Louisiana have been selected to participate in the 2014 Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI) in Salt Lake City, Utah, October 16-18. They are Rachael Tullier, Baton Rouge (representing Region 1); Rebekah Travis, New Orleans (representing Region 2), Madeline Monlezun, Covington (representing Region 3), and Morgan Ruoss, New Orleans, (representing Region 4).

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute brings together girls who are recognized as leaders in their councils to connect and take action on matters that touch the future for girls and for the Girl Scout Movement. The event runs concurrently with the Girl Scouts 2014 National Council Session/53rd Convention.

This year's theme - Girls Change the World - has never been more true. Girls will choose among seven issues and design related projects that will enable them to go out and make a difference in their communities. This year's issues are teen violence, healthy relationships, basic needs (such as hunger, poverty, homelessness, and natural disaster relief), inclusion/diversity, self-image/body image, education, and the status of women.

Camps complete ACA Accreditation

Girl Scout Camps Marydale, Whispering Pines, and Covington successfully completed their American Camp Association (ACA) accreditations last week! Every three years our camps undergo a thorough review process, to ensure we consistently achieve the highest standards in the areas of personnel, program, site administration, and health care.

Great job to Angela Arneal and her team, and our three camp rangers, Rangers David, Jason, and Mike!

Moms & Masks at Mardi Gras World

Our Program Pathway Sponsor, Mardi Gras World, has planned two fun Moms & Masks events for Girl Scouts and their mothers (fun for the whole family) on Tuesday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or Thursday, July 31, from 2 to 4 p.m.  You'll get to tour Mardi Gras World with its famous Float Den, watch a 15-minute HD movie, enjoy a slice of king cake, before making your very own mask in the Mask Making workshop. The tour also gives girls the opportunity to earn the History of Mardi Gras patch.

The fee is $35 per person.  Call or email Mardi Gras World at 504-527-0392 or info@mardigrasworld.com to reserve your spot by Friday, July 25.

July Employee of the Month

Girl Scouts Louisiana East is excited to announce Gina Sledge as its Employee of the Month for July 2014! Gina has been the Graphic Designer and Council Photographer for GSLE for 6 years, working out of the council's regional service center in Baton Rouge.

Staff members are nominated for Employee of the Month by other employees, with criteria based on work performance, going beyond the call of duty and helping other departments, working positively with others, and showing true dedication and professionalism in representing Girl Scouts here in southeast Louisiana.

Please join us in recognizing Gina for her dedication and strong work ethic, enthusiasm, eagerness to help others, and for exemplifying the mission of Girl Scouting at Girl Scouts Louisiana East. Congratulations, Gina!
