Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, love divine;

Love was born at Christmas,
Star and angels gave the sign.
~ Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894)

Bishop Fitzpatrick

Aloha kākou:

This poem from the Victorian writer, Christina Rossetti, provides the words for one of my favorite Christmas hymns.  The joy of Christmas is that the very love that is God becomes one with us in our world.  This is the mystery of the Incarnation. But as Michael Ramsey [the 100th Archbishop of Canterbury (1901-1988)] noted of Christmas, "So too we are brought face to face with the reality of the world we live in: we are, for example, stirred to remember those in this country who are homeless; it was so last Christmas, it was so the Christmas before that - and now perhaps the reality hits our minds." There is the reality of our faith:  The gift of the God born in Bethlehem is that we ourselves can now take that love into a broken world and incarnate it. Or as Rossetti writes in the last verse of her poem: "Love shall be our token, / Love be yours and love be mine, / Love to God and all men, / Love for plea and gift and sign."

My Christmas prayer for you and the entire diocesan ʻohana is that we might be guided by Jesus Christ, "the root and descendent of David, the bright morning star" (Revelation 22:16) throughout 2014.

The featured stained glass window is located in the nave at Epiphany Episcopal church in Honolulu. It is one of the nine windows created by renowned artist Erica Karawina, and the faces in the windows were based on the students and teachers at epiphany School at the time. This photo of the window was taken by Epiphany Church member, Portia Okamoto, the winner of this year's Christmas Card Contest.
