CPA Update - April 28, 2016
Hello ,

Welcome to the first issue of our redesigned CPA Update newsletter.  Along with the fresh new format, you'll find that the newsletter is much easier to access from your phone or tablet, so take us along to your next CPC meeting!

Along with breaking news from Beacon Hill and Boston City Hall, here's what's in this edition of CPA Update:
HouseHouse Budget Includes $10 million for CPA
CPA Trust Fund Amendment Passes
The Massachusetts House of Representatives has once again shown their support for CPA.  The state budget passed by the House this week included an amendment for $10 million to be transferred to the CPA Trust Fund from the FY16 state budget surplus.  The House amount mirrors the $10 million that was included in Governor Baker's budget proposal when it was released back in January.  If the state does have a surplus, the $10 million for CPA would provide a much-needed increase in the predicted 19% distribution to be received by CPA communities this year.

We are grateful to Representative Peter Kocot for filing the successful budget amendment that will provide the CPA funding, and to the 41 House co-sponsors. There's more work to be done, as we now must turn our attention to the Senate budget.  Today the Coalition is meeting with Senate Ways & Means as well as our Senate sponsors to seek the additional funding for the CPA Trust Fund.

Supporters of CPA adoption in Boston just gained a new ally as Mayor Marty Walsh officially endorsed the Community Preservation Act. In the weeks since Boston city council's public hearing on placing CPA on the November ballot, the Mayor had been quiet in regards to his position on the act. Yesterday however, Walsh called a press conference to let CPA supporters and Boston voters know that he is "all in."

MHPUpdated CPA Housing Guidebook from MHP
The Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP) has released an update to their guidebook on how cities and towns can use CPA funds to support housing efforts. Originally published in 2008 in conjunction with Citizens Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA) and the Community Preservation Coalition, this important CPA resource was designed to help new and experienced CPC members and communities understand how they can use Community Preservation Act funds to support local affordable housing initiatives. This new edition includes updates regarding eligible uses based on the 2012 amendments to the original legislation.

Download the guidebook online or contact Carsten Snow at 857-317-8583 or csnow@mhp.net to request a hard copy.
PBSOperation Lighthouse Rescue:
PBS Special Airing Next Wednesday
On Wednesday, May 4th at 9pm, PBS NOVA will be highlighting the incredible success of the Gay Head lighthouse project in the town of Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard.

Considered one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in 2013, the lighthouse had been precariously sitting only 43 feet from a quickly eroding cliffside. But last year, thanks to local efforts and an island-wide CPA collaboration, the entire lighthouse was moved about 150 feet from the cliff, protecting the landmark for another 140 years.

Tune in this week to PBS NOVA for their episode featuring this remarkable project,

Renovated Park Earns Tennis Industry's Public Park of the Year Award

Until recently, Peter Igo Park in the town of Marshfield was a troublesome area for the community. The park had fallen into disrepair due to general neglect and years of tight municipal budgets. However, thanks to the local nonprofit Friends of Peter Igo Park and CPA funding, the property was transformed from an eyesore into a vibrant, attractive, award-winning park.
