Introducing our New Board Members!

We are so excited to welcome four new Board members to our team this year. You met two of them in the last edition of our newsletter. Please join us in welcoming the other new members of our Board!

Mary Watson
Mary Watson is a founding member of Orange County Women's Chorus and returns to the board after a long hiatus. But, no matter what happened to her during the time off the board, she has been and continues to be an alto 2 in the OCWC. Mary is trained as a gerontologist and she served as Associate Director of Geriatric Medicine at UCI School of Medicine for almost 10 years. After that, she established free clinics for adults in Santa Ana that were sponsored by the FHP Foundation. The clinics became the basis for the clinical programs at the Orange County Rescue Mission. Later, she became a gerontology and health services consultant. During that time she consulted with the US Health Resources Service Administration on AIDS in non-white communities in Orange County and with builders of retirement communities.  She has served on many non-profit boards in Orange County. Most recently, she served on the 55+ Housing Council of the Southern California Branch of the Building Industry of America, and as President of the Board for Innovative Housing Opportunities for fifteen years. She was married to the love of her life, Dickson (Dave) Bruce for 47 years. Their daughter Emily is married to Justin McCrary, and they have given Mary two of the nicest grandchildren ever, Zeke and Lila.

Shauna Eheler
Shauna Eheler is new to the OCWC, though her relationship to music runs deep and strong. Shauna has degrees in Peace Studies and Vocal Performance from Chapman University, and in her college years, studied abroad in ten countries as a James Farley Semester at Sea Scholarship recipient. She's also had the privilege of participating in four international music tours and performing both lead and supporting roles in over a dozen opera productions. Shauna's professional background is in legal administration in the entertainment industry and includes work at The Tennis Channel, DreamWorks Animation, and Myspace -- though her heart is in the non-profit sector. In addition to her work with OCWC, Shauna is a community organizer for Shambhala International and First Century Families. When she's not out trying to save the world, Shauna can often be found conducting edible science experiments in her kitchen -- or at a yoga class, trying to fold herself into a human pretzel.  Shauna is thrilled to take on OCWC's mission as her own and express it through art and community outreach.
Spotlight on Singer Volunteers

Like all nonprofits, we rely on the talents of our incredible volunteers to get the job done. Our singers make financial contributions to the OCWC, spend countless hours in rehearsals and performances, and volunteer in many other ways to be sure we can bring outstanding choral literature to our audiences that often would not otherwise be heard. This year, the OCWC implemented a time-tracking system so that all of our volunteers could submit their time--including our community volunteers, if they choose to do so. We encourage everyone to track their time, because this helps us achieve important goals:
  • We gain a better understanding of what it takes to do the business of the OCWC--and how many staff roles are being done by volunteers!
  • We can estimate a value for all those volunteer hours, and include that value in our grant applications when requested.
  • Most importantly, we can recognize our volunteers for their service to the OCWC. We can't say thank you often enough!
We established award levels for our volunteers, and we are pleased to recognize the following singers who achieved the Whole Note level of 40 hours or more through April of this year:
  • Kathy Baldasari, Board member and chief financial officer of the OCWC.
  • Lisa Claborne, Silent Auction Chair and attendance tracker, a founding member of the OCWC.
  • Mary Langsdorf, Board president
  • Heather Spickard, Board member, and champion of our iOC fundraising campaign.
Please join us in thanking all of our volunteers for the many hours they contribute to the OCWC. We truly couldn't do it without you! If you're interested in becoming an OCWC volunteer, please send us an email!
