Eliza Rubenstein, Artistic Director
Orange County is filled with great singers, and some of the best ones don't read music or attend weekly rehearsals. They come by their talent naturally, and you can hear them performing on almost any day of the week in our local parks and open spaces. They're our local birds---over 450 species, by some counts---and they're the theme of our upcoming concert, The Birds and the Bees, which takes wing on March 14 and 15.
The program is a musical Audubon guide, with songs from many lands about hawks, nightingales, chickadees, doves, and more, plus a few tunes about bees and love for good measure. You'll hear Shakespeare settings, folk songs, operatic duets, and a Beatles tune (guess which one!), and as a special treat, you'll enjoy a special visit from our local Sea and Sage Audubon Society, plus stories and photos from my own years as a birdwatcher and amateur nature photographer.
Make this concert part of your "Big Year"---we promise it'll be tons of fun for lovers of creatures and choral music alike! There's no need to bring your binoculars (every seat in our venues is a good one!), but do bring a friend and join us for the fun!

Where are We Now? An Update on our
Tour Scholarship Fund and Challenge Grant
At our December concerts, you heard from two inspiring young women about what our tour to the UK will mean to them, and their need for financial assistance to be able to participate. They represent several of our singers who will need a little help from our OCWC family to be able to make this memorable tour. The board recently voted to fund all of our applicants, a funding need of $8,725. We are happy to report that we've achieved this goal!
An anonymous donor has pledged $10,000 to the OCWC as a challenge grant for artistic excellence over the next three years: $5,000 for the current season and $2,500 in each of the following two seasons. These funds will be used to support the variety of instrumentalists and guest artists who perform with us, as well as commissions of new music for treble chorus from contemporary composers. Through December 31, we had achieved roughly half of our challenge grant funding goal for the current year. We invite you to help us meet this challenge, and help us offer even more varied and creative programming, by making a donation now! There are a number of ways to do this--choose the way that works best for you:
- Mail a check payable to the OCWC at 23802 Avenida de la Carlota, Laguna Hills, CA 92653;
- Make a donation when you attend our March concerts; or
- Make a donation online with your credit card by clicking on the image below.
The OCWC Board has already begun strategic planning for the next three years, and this challenge grant, matched by your donations, will help us achieve our artistic goals:
- presenting concerts accompanied by the finest musicians in the area, like the ones you heard in December;
- regularly commissioning new works for the treble repertoire;
- training young women conductors through our conducting internship program;
- making recordings of our work available to the public; and several more!
We invite you to join us on this exciting journey toward our 20th anniversary over the next three years!

Farewell, Dear Friends
The OCWC bids farewell to two beloved members of our family.
 | Mary Watson Bruce and Dave Bruce |
We are saddened by the death of Dickson D. (Dave) Bruce, Jr. on November 24, 2014. Dave was a member of our OCWC family from our earliest days, as the husband of founding member Mary Watson Bruce. He was a patron, donor, fan, and all-round great friend to all of us. Dave retired from UCI's department of history in 2008 after an illustrious 37-year career as a professor and mentor, and continued his post-retirement career as a historian and writer. The OCWC was deeply honored to sing at his memorial service on January 10, 2015.
 | Jennica and Meg Waldram |
We also mourn the passing of dear friend and former OCWC singer, Margaret Waldram on January 4, 2015. Meg was an accomplished pianist as well as a singer with a remarkable range--a first soprano in her youth, and a second alto in her time with the OCWC, she could (and did) sing anything! Meg was joined in the OCWC by her daughter Jennica, and the two sang with us until employment opportunities took the family out of state. Meg kept in touch with us on a regular basis through Facebook, and returned to California to sing with us for our tenth anniversary celebration in 2008. We remember her incredible musicianship, her great spirit, and her wonderful laugh.
