OCWC Dancing Days in December!

Ring in the Holiday Cheer with the

Orange County Women's Chorus

Eliza Rubenstein

December 7 and 8 are our "dancing days," as the OCWC spins our way through the British Isles with a concert that we promise will put you in the holiday spirit! Headlining the program is Benjamin Britten's beloved "Ceremony of Carols," presented in honor of the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth; we'll sing the work in its original treble-choir version, featuring harpist Brian Noel and a host of soloists from within the ensemble. Also on the agenda: John Rutter's festive arrangement of "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," Holst's stunning eight-part "Ave Maria," a lilting Irish carol to transport you straight to the green hills of the Emerald Isle, and plenty more! You'll also be on hand to hear our announcement about an exciting event in the OCWC's future. (Hint: It involves the British Isles!) We think this might be our best holiday concert yet-and it will be followed, of course, by a reception featuring some special treats from across the pond. Get your tickets now, and bring a friend who needs some good music and good cheer! We'll see you on December 7 and 8.

Sarah Hughes Tunes Up as Assistant Director

Sarah Hughes
Sarah Hughes
Please help us to congratulate Sarah Hughes on her promotion to Assistant Director for the 2013 - 2014 season.

Sarah has been with the OCWC since 2011, singing and serving in the capacity of conducting intern to Eliza. This promotion reflects our appreciation for her hard work and our confidence in her talents.A Bachelor of Music graduate from Chapman University, Sarah is now working on her Master's degree and completing her thesis, which addresses  incorporating more music by female composers into performance repertoire. The love of music has been a running theme through Sarah's life. Her mother is a choral director in St. Louis, Missouri, and Sarah's earliest musical memories include the sounds of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Corellis' Christmas Concerto on her mother's preferred radio station. She began her life in the arts as a dancer, learning ballet, tap, jazz, and flamenco before transitioning to voice as a music major at Chapman University in Orange, California. Dance continues to be an important force in her life; most weekends you'll find Sarah enjoying swing dance at Atomic Ballroom in Irvine!

You'll see lots more of Sarah as this season develops, and the OCWC is fortunate to have her with us!

Deborah Kennedy

Deborah Kennedy joins us this year as our board member in charge of fundraising. A native Canadian who studied theater/music at Dalhousie in Nova Scotia and public relations at Algonquin College, she has sung extensively in various choruses throughout her life, including a stint as guest soloist for the Canadian Opera Company while in college. She began her career in sponsorship sales/marketing and distribution in film and television, and she most recently was a management consultant working with Fortune 500 corporations. Today, Deborah is an independent film producer, a fashion consultant for CAbi (Carol Anderson By Invitation), and the mother of an active 2-1/2 year old son.

Ask Deborah why she sought a position on the OCWC's Board of Directors, and she'll tell you that she saw an opportunity to make a difference.  In fact, ask her why she does any of the many things in which she's involved, and she'll tell you the same!  Deborah has devoted much of her life to empowering women and girls, which makes her a perfect fit for the OCWC. We're excited to have Deborah on the Board!
