A Note from the Artistic Director

Eliza Rubenstein

Wine. Hors d'oeuvres. Desserts. An incredible silent auction. Show-stopping numbers from some of the most memorable women characters in your favorite operas and Broadway shows.

Do I really need to say much more?

Probably not, but here are a few more specifics about why you must not, under any circumstances, miss the OCWC's "What a Bunch of Characters!" concert on June 1 at St. George's Episcopal Church:
  • You'll hear the chorus and some of our top soloists performing music from operas including Bizet's "Carmen" and Verdi's "Macbeth," and Broadway shows including "Little Shop of Horrors," "Damn Yankees," "Annie Get Your Gun," and "Wicked." (We know about popular!)
  • We'll be joined by a very special guest: mezzo-soprano Susan Ali, whom a newspaper reviewer once called "the kind of Carmen who could make a bishop kick out a stained-glass window." Yikes! Try to resist the urge to do any damage to our host venue when she sings her "Habanera."
  • You'll have the chance to bid on an amazing array of silent auction items, including tickets to Orange County attractions, dinners at great restaurants, wine, photography and more. You can support the OCWC just by taking home some terrific loot.
  • While you take in the music, you'll enjoy a selection of wines from ONEHope Wines, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, and desserts. Bring your friends and reserve a whole table!
As the song says---if I'm remembering right---"Whatever the OCWC wants, the OCWC gets," and what we want is for you to join us on June 1. Get your tickets now and let's have some fun!

Honor an Amazing Woman
(P.S. You don't have to take the stage!)

As we close our 15th anniversary season, all of us at the OCWC realized that the main reason behind our success is how we have been able to support, honor and celebrate the amazing women around us everyday. Now, we are giving you the chance--and you don't even have to sing!

Just click here to download a cameo template. Cut out the "cameo" and decorate it in honor or memory of one or more special women who have positively influenced you and those you love. You can honor women you know or ones who have inspired you (even though you've never met). And whether you're a master scrapbook artist or miserably crafts-challenged, anything goes!

All of the cameos will be displayed at our June 1 concert. Mail your cameo (and enclose a small gift, if you choose) to the OCWC, Attn: Amazing Women, 1 Mansfield Drive, Irvine, CA 92620.

A Bittersweet Goodbye

When good friends get great new jobs, we love to celebrate with them. But this time, those good friends are OCWC singers and board members Kristen Soderberg and Amy Osajima. Both women--who have been outstanding additions to the group--have been offered new career opportunities out of state and will be leaving us for bright futures. So it is with love (and a bit of sadness) that we say goodbye.

Amy Osajima
Amy Osajima

Amy has just accepted a position as director of marketing at Indiana University's Department of Theatre and Drama in Bloomington, Indiana. She re-joined the OCWC in 2010 as a singer after a thirteen-year hiatus, and was elected to the board in 2012. As the development chair, she used her experience as the former manager of the Newport Beach Film Festival to find new donors and funding avenues. A frequent soloist, her talent and smarts were huge assets to the OCWC.

Kristen Soderberg
Kristen Soderberg

Kristen Soderberg has recently received a promotion at FreddieMac and has relocated to Austin, Texas. Kristen joined the OCWC as a singer in 2003 and was elected to the board the first time in 2005, when she led the fundraising team. When her career took her to New York, she resigned from the board. Returning to Southern California, she re-joined the OCWC and sang with the group until a move to Burbank made the weekly rehearsals impractical. She was elected to the board for the second time in 2008, and focused on our marketing efforts and ticket sales as co-chair of marketing and development. You may recognize her as the smiling face at our box office for many concerts!

While we are immensely proud of both women, it breaks our hearts to say goodbye. We wish them both the best of luck on their new and exciting endeavors.
