Officer Safety
 Officer Safety is often a battle-cry that resonates through police headquarters when changes to police practices are being considered. And while it is a good one, as those who have chosen to uphold the law, we should remain mindful of two factors: - Law enforcement, by its very nature, is a risky profession
- Officer safety is just as much a front-line mandate as it is an administrative one.
Despite officers demanding that officer safety be a paramount concern, the recent tragedy and ensuing law enforcement response in Boston showed that when push comes to shove, officers bravely run toward the risk. I have heard supervisor candidates say "I would never put my officers in harms way"; that is not a realistic response. Yes, we want to be very mindful of the risks and do our best to engage in risk-reduction decision making, but elimination of risks is not currently possible. To the second point above, 'officer safety' decision making is not just a supervisory and administrative consideration, officers themselves have a very important role in advancing officer safety. Seemingly little issues like leaving 10 minutes before the end of the shift or sliding outside of one's designated patrol district can impact officer safety by reducing response coverage or response time should another officer need assistance. Supervisors and managers should be hyper-vigilant in seeking to advance officer safety, at the same time they should individually and collectively encourage officers to find that best blend of effectiveness and risk-reduction.
