Remember those goals from last month?

February is goal sustaining time.

If you were like many who set first of the year goals, you have lost a bit of steam since goal creation time.  For that reason I have three recommendations to keep you - or get you back on - track.

First, use the 'smart' in your smart phone.  Most smart phones have a calendar/alarm/task reminder app.  By setting a reminder once and using the repeat function you can have yourself receiving daily, semi-weekly, or weekly reminders of the activities you intended to do to achieve your goal.

Second, have a tangible reminder.  Find the area where you are most prone to procrastinate and place a visual reminder of your goal achieved.  This can be a photo that you take, a picture from a magazine or other publication, or some other type of symbolic trophy.  The important thing is that it serves as a guilt-inducing reminder to get back to your goal activities.

Third, tell people about your goal.  None of us likes to admit that we have quit.  When we keep quiet about our goals we can drift away from them without anyone being any wiser.  But, if we tell people that we are going to achieve a goal we increase the likelihood of follow-through because we don't want to lose face.

Goals are great, but it is the goal-directed behaviors that make the difference.  If your goals are/were really important to you, now is the time to re-assess and re-commit.

Read on to see how sustaining initiatives can appear at a chief, captain/lieutenant, or sergeant oral board.

Sustaining as a Chief-Level Question

Question:

"What long-term initiatives will you pursue in your first year?"

Tip

When this question is answered, the candidate can expect that the response they give will be something to which they will be held accountable.  For that reason, research on long-term needs of the agency as well as achievable long-term solutions should be conducted before setting foot in front of the panel.

Sustaining as a Lieutenant or Captain-Level Question

Question:

"What is your most complex professional accomplishment?"

Tip

This question gives the panel a glimpse into your organizing capabilities and orientation.  A connection can be made between this type of success and where your strongest interests lie in the law enforcement discipline (e.g.: budgeting, weaponry, training, traffic, etc.).  Be sure to describe the obstacles that you confronted and how they were overcome, as well as the ultimate outcome of your efforts.

Sustaining as a Sergeant-Level Question

Question: "How would you handle an unpopular policy from the chief?"

Tip

Many candidates realize that they must support the policy even if they disagree.  Stronger responses have the candidate telling the panel that they will research the reason behind the policy before introducing it to their officers so that they are better prepared to address criticisms should they arise.  The strongest response focuses on sustaining the desired outcome of the policy through long-term inspections of officer behavior to assure that the new policy becomes practice, not mere words.

I purchased your material to study for my Sergeant promotional exam. I studied regularly. Two months prior to the exam, I  took several practice tests. I took my Sergeant exam with confidence.  Over 90 police officers took the test and I scored the best, #1 on the list.  Thanks again and I am  looking forward to your Lieutenant promotional exam material in the near future.

"Dear PoliceCareer.com -

"I just wanted to let you know how effective your system is! Your tests enabled me to finish #1 on our promotional list for Sergeant,  and in March 2010 - I was promoted! Absolutely the best money I could have spent!

I have taken three prior promotional tests in the past and the results were not good. On one prior promotional test, obviously before knowing about your services, I managed to score 70%. Needless to say, that in the competitive world we live in today, I did not get promoted. The other tests were not much better than that one..

I can't say enough about how your process helped me. Wish I would have known of it sooner.

Keep up the good work!"

Chris Porter - New Sergeant in Pennsylvania
