Read the Story

It was August 25, 2007 and another semester at Fresno State had just begun.  Winemaker John Giannini was getting the newest class of winery production students geared up on the sorting line as he neatly lined up the loaded macro bins on the east pad.  It was the production students' first time working in the winery and nearly seven tons of Syrah grapes from Frank Saviez were being delivered.  With the forecast of 100 degrees by 4 pm, John wanted to get this fruit stemmed, crushed, and moved into tank as soon as possible.  Little did they all know that these grapes would someday become one of Fresno State's most popular wines!

With quality fruit and great winemaking practices, 2007 turned out to be a stellar year for this Syrah.  341 cases were bottled by the students in 2009 and the vintage went on to perform very well.  In fact, the 2007 Saviez was still receiving gold and silver medals at commercial wine competitions in 2014.  If you ask the current graduating enology students, the vast majority will tell you that the 2007 Saviez Syrah is their favorite wine in the Fresno State line-up.  It also continues to be a popular wine at consumer tastings and events.

In 2013, the 2007 Saviez Syrah sold for $19.95 a bottle.  Realizing that this exceptional vintage showcased the enology students and program very well, marketing director Kevin Smith lowered the price to $14.95 so it would be enjoyed by more local consumers.
.
To celebrate the success of the 2007 Saviez Syrah, Fresno State Winery is now offering  the remaining 36 cases to Fresno State viticulture and enology alumni, students, staff, and faculty (21 and older) at a special rate.
